I think people are reading a little too far into this..
There are probably FIVE rappers currently who have the power to broker this type of deal
Jay-Z
Eminem
Kanye West
Drake
Lil Wayne
That's about it. Companies aren't going to swoop in all of a sudden and offer to purchase 500,00 copies of the next Dead Prez album. No company is going to purchase 250,000 copies of the next Killer Mike LP. These type of deals are secured for artists with a sustained history of relevance, selling power, tour popularity, and the like. These deals will NOT become for the norm for the Hip Hop industry. Hell even in the Pop industry you only have 3-5 artists who could score this type of arraignment (Lady Gaga, Adele, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Beyonce) You HAVE to be a superstar for this to be a financially viable business opportunity for the company. Let's not act like suddenly companies are going to be emptying their wallets to offer Rick Ross and T.I a million copy deals
This is no less disgusting than buying your own records.
i mean, how are y'all the SAME muthafucckas b*tching about this? and PRAISE KENDRICK LAMAR for receiving a PLATINUM PLAQUE when he TECHNICALLY haven't yet SOLD a million copies. #doublestandard
You're forgetting some other rappers:
Oprah
Paris Hilton
I mean hell - why couldn't/wouldn't they rap? As you say, they are superstars and this could be a viable business opportunity for their companies.
Paris Hilton already dropped an album....say she goes back to the lab and spits some hot-ass fiya (paused for a moment to ROFL) and Atlantic puts that album out. But before it comes out, her peeps at Hilton Hotels says their gonna purchase 2 million of them and put them next to the mints on pillows for folks who stay at their hotels around the world...according to some niccas in here (and elsewhere), Paris Hilton would be the hottest rapper out.
Ditto for Oprah putting a couple million copies of her rap album in O magazine.
You believe that?
That's how innane it is for folks to put too much stake in record sales.
But that's exactly what can happen now...
Still, this is some ultimate hustla chit. Gotta give props to Jay for that...
Hilton wouldn't waste money buying Paris Hilton's album copies because it does nothing for their brand to market music from somebody who has no fan base or audience. Your hypothetical is a fantasy
