Rick Ross' very existence is a lampooning of hip hop's cultural aspects. Fantano knows this and treated the album harshly due to this. Ross is the musical equivalent to ass implants.

to be apart of the culture i feel you need to know your history and take it serious, not on some play shyt

anybody who is part of the culture wouldnt have play themselves like this, realy talk shyt was a joke, and was basically mocking hip hop imo

knowledge and love of the culture, plus you need to take it serious, dude cant at it like this is some joke of a genre and i cant respect that, and being honest people who didnt grow up into hip hop i dont truly respect they opinion on hip hop, tbh i was born into this shyt, and take it serious

and tbh its know way these white dudes who didnt grow in our communities cant understand the struggle or the pain alot of these rappers spit, even the stunning rappers who they say only spit on material shyt is deep rooted into our community struggles, like jcole once said "they wonder why we rock alot of ice, cause we got alot pain, 500 years of swelling im trying tell em" basically we start from the bottom with nothin and they wonder why when we get something we go dumb and wild out

how do you know he has no knowledge of the culture? and do you know he dont take it serious? so mocking fake fraud ass ducktails raps was moking hiphop?
:what:

You know Needledrop dont talk down on all rappers or hate hiphop right? He says his opinion just like any other white person on this message board does.

not putting this ross album on the level of any other them, would you feel the same if he made a video like that about one of them album, regardless its disrespectful to the culture, just look at the video dude is corny as fukk and never be apart of this culture, this white boy is stand 100ft away and look at the culture from a distance type dude, he doesnt deserve to speak on the culture

and i have seen other corny ass reviews from him that posters on this site post, and i felt the same way, dudes doesnt know the history of rap, he can sit his dumb ass down

i had to cut that shyt off cuz my blood starts boiling listening to that herb for more than 30 seconds...real talk thats how i know this site is a bunch of hipster nerds bc anybody who thinks this geeks opinion on hip hop holds ANY weight whatsoever needs to jump off the nearest fukkin cliff...it's mad aggravating too because he has such a pretentious, pious opinion yet he doesn't have the credentials to be reviewing an album like this in the first place

A lot of people in the culture think that Ross is an artist who doesn't take himself seriously, or they don't think his music isn't worth taking seriously. While I personally wouldn't simplify it that much, and while I've come to expect more detailed reviews from Anthony Fantano, I do think that lack of seriousness is a legitimate critique of RIck Ross' music. I really think a lot of people are just upset about who's reviewing it - if a veteran black hip-hop journalist said the same thing, no one would care. It'd just be another review.

Not saying that this is what you're doing, but we can't just fall back on "he's not part of the culture!" any time a white cat doesn't knobslob an album.

If you check his review of God Forgives I Don't, he actually goes into much more detail about his issues with Ross. And while I don't agree with everything he says about the album, dude definitely backs up his points.

all those rappers you named have been mocked before

so if he made a video review on any of those artist and said "BIG raps about living poor but his mom said it not true" would you get mad and cry because its a white guy that didnt grow up with hiphop but saying something thats true?

i review u posted i can accept, but i still wont respect just cause who its coming from

like i look at a song like "hold me back" and i think its no way that dude will ever understand that song, so just opinion was irrelevant to it, same with alot of tracks on the album, but i do like that he explained his self and why he thought the album wasnt great, but dude is corny as shyt and is a outsider looking into a culture that he not from

:pachaha:

I'm "part of the culture" myself - been listening since I was a kid, been documenting rap for 10 years, manage artists, write artists' bios, help book shows, etc. - and I have some of the exact same criticisms of God Forgives I Don't as that review does. So my opinion is valid just because he's an "outsider?" Why should the person saying it matter if it's a legitimate critique? :mindblown:

He gave legitimate criticisms. His points in that review, especially the Scarface analogy, were all valid (even though I disagree with his thoughts on Maybach Music IV and Sixteen). He's right about Ross focusing so much on the celebratory side that he gets repetitive.

Plus, what's with this whole idea of anybody who's corny isn't part of the culture? Does hip-hop not have anybody corny in it? :camby:

Also saw this other video he made about him supposedly hating hip-hop.

that video made me take him even less serious, i cant take nobody outside the culture review our music serious

no if he made a video about mocking it and disrespecting it, i would have a problem, and yes him being a white who didnt grow up to hip hop and doesnt fully understand the culture and admits that he not a hip hop head is reason i would never respect him opinion on hip hop

plus in the video i quoted above look at the albums he love, typical white boy i dont like rap but these guys are cool albums, fukk outta here
