You're wrong. Using your own money is foolish.
And it's hard using money that you don't have as well if you're an up and coming act. Signing to a major, using that money (setting a budget of course) and flip that sh*t into something major!
You're wrong. Using your own money is foolish.
Through all of music or Hip Hop? I know some genres make bank via album sales but I'mma need some receipts if you're implying Hip Hop is making bank off these signing deals.Over $10 billion passes through the Music Industry every year. I know plenty of cats that are eating decent & have solid careers but let the internet tell you there's no money in it...
He used to do 500k in a week. Gold and platinum. Game accepted a reality Ross hasn't yet.i mean people in here saying indy is dumb
as if the game didn't just do 170k indy.... about 120k more than ross on a major![]()
Nas has a 20+ year fanbase that isn't likely to grow. Also, he too has seen his best days already in terms of success and fame, so in his case it makes sense to worry more about Mass Appeal instead of thinking it's 1996 againNas is planning on going independent.
With that Bieber money I don't even think they noticed Ross left.Death Jam![]()
anyone else parts ways with a label and its "GET DROPPED FROM YOUR LABEL BREHS"
Ross gets dropped and its "throws def jam in the bushes"
the love this forum got for this fukkboy is disgusting
anyone else and they become "irrelevant" according to thecoli but Ross gonna get passes for a lifetime i guess.
steal someones name

wrong....
his last 2 albums ON INTERSCOPE did 80k and 98k first week...
his first 2 indy joints did 117k first week and 95k on 2.5
so lets take a wild guess which one made HIM more more... making 10-25 cents an album on a major (if you're LUCKY) or making 3-5 dollars a record on an indy while doing MORE numbers
If you believe you've got good product that'll sell why wouldn't you use your own money? Obviously it's a bigger risk but if you back yourself to sell clearly there's a bigger reward on offer.
With all due respect breh, I can't get down with this thinking. If you have enough to fund your projects comfortably, you should do it without worrying about paying somebody else back. Give yourself a loan and don't worry about label pressure. Ross also has 2 other artists that can move 100k units.
Says you, I'm writing a book with my own money, paying for everything and guess what all the return profit going in my pocket...
this is the digital age, signing a contract when your a big ALREADY ESTABLISHED artist is stupid in my book, especially if your already popular. I get it, but I'm not about to sign my work away.![]()
If you invest your money and flop you willthen move on to the next project
If you invest label money and flop you will, be in debt to the label and probably have your career shelved and still be under contract. Imagine being a multimillionaire and having to beg label bosses to try to get a release date.
What's business do you own? You listen to people that want you take loans because they benefit from it. In this business using your own money is better if you're already established. Slim Thug lives a better life than most rappers on a major.First of all Business 101...never use your own money.
Don't put your food money or house money up for collateral because when you fail and you will fail (a majority of business owners and especially enterntainers see unexpected, unwelcomed and unforseeable setbacks at least one time, at least) then your homeless and hungry. Although people talk about hunger as if it's motivating it really isn't.
When you sign a deal with a label you are working with a team. First of all 1 man, cannot do it all. Whether you are signed to a deal which is a collaborative network of businesses and enterprises that work together or are signed to an indie who have smaller deals with businesses whether locally or nationally you aren't doing it all yourself.
You aren't in your basement printing flyers, buy ink and papers, you aren't photoshopping your own flyers and going to various blogs and social media building your own name up, reaching out to bloggers and radio stations, internet websites booking interviews, reaching out to people to shoot videos and promos, reaching out to people who make gear to promote, building relationships and all that shyt. Not to mention reaching out to venues, scheduling booking etc.Theres so much work that goes into being an artist. Recording vocals, having shyt mixed and mastered...all shyt is time consuming, mad time consuming thus why all of these things are individual jobs or careers.
You work for a label you get to work with people and under people, if you brick on a major you can ghostwrite for the label, talent development, a&r...you brick indy, you go to mcdonalds or just go back home.
If you're banking on a major guess what, they put more money into your project- more budget, more promotion, bigger venues, better venues, longer tours, international tours, radio, tv, etc.
Im sorry its hard if you're indy to get on the tonight show and do the circuits, it's hard to headline madison square garden.
Sony music, sony pictures, universal pictures, universal music = cameo in a movie.
Signing to a major isn't the end all be all, indy is dope too but its not freedom, both are serious amounts of work. Yes if you work your contracts with indy you can keep your masters and own yourself but you are going to get 15 million youtube hits and achieve a level of stardom to where owning your masters is super necessary. People are still paying to play songs from the 60's and 80's in commericals and those artists are still getting residuals and havent performed in years! Moving paying to play songs and such---as an indie you keep your masters but it's not like your getting dikked around like that.
