I never got the fascination with him. He produced a couple huge records in the 80’s, had a comeback hit with Jay Z going on 20 years ago and mostly works as a consultant (or as a producer where no one can explain what exactly he does) otherwise.

It seems like everyone who consults him would be better off picking up a set of Brian Eno’s “Oblique Strategies” cards for creativity. It would be a million times cheaper and the end product would likely be better.

Thank you. I don't get the hype of someone that is a consultant and not someone that can actually alter the sound with a instrument or machine and doesn't even come into the studio with music and just allows these bands to play and he just sits in the corner and adds a comment here and there. So basically he can never work with a singer as he cant provide music for them but he can sit in with a band after they've come up with a song and just ask them to change a few things but can't actually pick up an instrument and demonstrate what he is thinking

And this is rather ignorant because you have absolutely no proof that this is being done. All you're doing is projecting. And I know you're wrong, because he has produced for singers where he was the sole producer.

Rick Rubin was a consultant forJay's MCHG, but he has NO credits on that album. Nelly Furtado consulted him for Loose, but again, he has NO credits.

Place is the most ignorant when it comes to the creation of music that I've ever encountered.

Ok maybe I am being ignorant I am just assuming. I know Justin Timberlake worked with him on "Another song' for futuresex/love sounds but as Rick can't play piano at all makes me think who was responsible for the piano section of that track for example. Does Rick sit and listen to JT or whoever play and then add his opinion or does Justin walk in and the music is ready for him to sing over?

Like I said Rick is obviously doing something right I just thought it was more than what it appears to be :yeshrug:

All you heard on that song was a piano? How do you know that he can't play a piano?

Over rated. Music writers make a bigger deal about his involvement with projects than fans do.

How does that make him overrated? Music writers pick and choose what to make a big deal about. He's hardly even discussed outside of the podcast he has and little pop up appearances. You'd hardly find anyone gushing about how Rick Rubin is a GOAT Hip Hop producer. I've seen him on lists, but not to the point where he was like a mandatory lock for Top 3, Top5, or a Top 10 like a Dre, RZA, Premo, or Marley. I mean, he has the work or at least credits to substantiate why he's great. He isn't one of favorite producers, but he has work on songs that I like.

nonsensical approach to what producer is by you

This is to anybody in this thread..

You mean to tell me that you all NEVER thought of a beat or some type of rhythm in your head that you thought would be dope, but knew you couldnt use a program or instrument to create it?? or heard a fire song to sample but wouldnt have no idea how to upload it into Pro Tools?

Lets say you didnt and you found a "so-called REAL Producer" to do it for you. He sells it and its a million seller.

Are you asking for production credit or you letting homie that you found have the credit and pay?

Ill wait..

It used to be called a coproducer in hip hop pillar based circles of business in the music industry.

Like for instance my debut record and the remix.
I brought the sample and hook idea and rhymes to palermo [RIP]originally. Then palermo went and produced the beat.

To later...
On the remix.
STRO, Bonaface of bon n nip [RIP].
stro decided he could interpolate the original sample in remixing the original song idea.

In hiphop circles if you did not actually create the chops, programming to full arrangement. You did not produce the beat. Legally you can and should be awarded the coproduction of the record. If you supplied the idea for the hook or the sonic landscape.
for publishing credit on the production side.
Which should take place for a solo emcee. Who really does what a solo emcee is supposed to do.

If you never really originally propose the sample or hook as an emcee.
Then you should not get any production credit or co-producer credit.
You really not supposed to have any input culturally.
as an emcee in the workflow of the production. As that is reserved for the dj pillar. As an emcee it is stepping over bounds into the dj pillar. If you are an emcee in the new school way of thought.
You are supposed to supply the lyrics.
Then the producer is supposed to handle the job in full of producing the record. Down to hiring the engineer who is going to mix the record. If you mix the record on your own that is not apart of production in the new school way of thought. That is simply an engineering task you can take upon yourself. Yet you would be better served to hire an engineer to record mix and master the track.
Also since rap is fully misappropriated down to the term.

It has allowed rnb sellout culture thief ideals.
to revert it back to ol school way of thought.
mca way meets sugarhill based tricknology.
where rnb culture thief meets art house based semantics.
Continue to plague and cause systemic erosion.
to the skillset of the new school way of thought businesses.
Where that erosion and misappropriation.
will soon plague commerce in any array of capitalism and business. To any and every sector of life as well.
If not properly kept in check to the mores and norms of the new school way of thought.
Which is why the communications act and prison industrial economy have ruined American life beyond repair. By misappropriation of the business of rap. After the death of the ol school way of thought. To rejuvenate the ol school way of thought. Plus cause death to the mores and norms of the new school way of thought.
To the point even the term ol school and new school have no meaning any more in general.

He's trash and should never be allowed to touch anything related to hip hop currently. He lives off his name not his work.

Rick rubin exists as a legscy artist in an ol school way of thought ideal as a producer. Where ol school way of thought production hinges on sellout rock and rnb administrative practices.
Centered Around motown meets mca way to rock administrstion practices of executive producer based theft.
Which were phased out of practice in the new school way of thought.

Anytime you see ol school way of thought executive produced theft.
You are dealing with culture thief sellout practices.

No, the artists he's worked with have made comments about his
hands off approach to producing. Dude didn't pull it out of thin air.
