i still have my landline phone number and my landline cordless phones, but it's been VOIP since 2005. first it was ported to vonage and i thought those savings were a big deal, then i ported my number to google voice for a one time $20 fee and combined that with a obihai device (a one time purchase of $30) and that's the total cost of keeping my landline number active in the house. oh i forgot about the $12 a year i pay for e911.

Summary - phone lines is an old technology and it's time to adapt. I'm sure someone cried about not having a physical copy of a telegram and complained about not being able to hear and coverage when telephones made the telegram extinct.

That's all this is. People hate change. :yeshrug:

This is why.. my bm lives in a place where you have ZERO fukking hope of getting a signal within miles.. ZERO... don't matter who you got as a carrier, i have never once seen a person have cell phone service. That's not the only place in america like that

most important, emergencies.. it's as simple as coming home, putting your phone on the charger and going to sleep.. oops the power went out while you was sleep.. phone dead

you are FINISHED... no phone whatsoever.. somebody dying, no 911 for you.. need to call anyone for anything, it's a wrap

are these scenarios less and less these days.. of course. but you can't just force the shyt on people without any viable backup methods.. first person to die cause there are no more landlines and somebody getting the fukk sued out them

I agree that's an issue but wouldn't it make more sense to grant these people access to 21st century technology? We need to move forward, not backwards, breh. :francis:

This what friggin happens when stupid ass gov becomes too big. To hell with these elites and a plague on their damned families.
Actually it's the opposite. A stronger government would regulate ATT and force them to provide a service to those older individuals who don't have an alternative. Bruce Rauner is a hands-off, "let the markets decide" kind of governor of Illinois who will side with big business like he did here.

I agree that we need to move forward but we have to teach those less-fortunate about the new wave. ATT aren't being forced to educate senior citizens or set up VoIP calling or illustrate the basics of cell phones.

My mom is around 55 and had trouble understanding cellphones about 5 years ago. Can't expect an +80 year old granny to be able to just adjust easily to all her calls through a cellphone.

Sounds like excuses to stay stagnant to me. :francis:

Cell phones are easier to use than landlines. When my grandfather passed away last year my grandmother had to go through major changes. Moved out of her house of 60+ years and got a cell phone. I stayed with my grandmother for a week after the funeral. It was her first week with a cell phone. She drove me crazy because she was constantly on that joint. Free long distance? :gladbron: Don't even have to dial a 1? :gladbron: Can take it to the store and still talk? :gladbron:

Landlines are old and limited. There is no reason to still have them other than sheer laziness (on behalf of telecoms and old people) at this point. :yeshrug:

Yes, cell phones are superior. The point is that you are assuming everyone has a grandson to hold their hand through the process. If your grandmother didn't have you she would have been fukked.

It never hurts to have old tech as a backup...:francis: Y'all in a rush to get to the future not realizing there can be calamities and setbacks... you erase the redundant systems then what happens when we need a fallback plan...

You know they still make vinyl records right?! :francis:

Vinyl records are for collectors. They'll always have value.

You do know there was a time when even landlines weren't around, right? How did humanity survive that? Let's use those ancient skills and mix them with the new tech. If you could only choose one you know damn well you'd pick the celly because it's better. So why continue to fukk around with the old shyt and enable telecoms to not build their infrastructure and old people to stay ignorant? :francis:

I should have clarified, I didn't help her with her cell phone at all. I think I may have helped her save some numbers but she had her lil address book that she would have been using with her landline anyway. I was only pointing out how easy that transition was for her. She was pretty much up and running same day and my grandmother is a typical old lady.

:dahell: There's nothing holding them back from going into a broadband future... They are the ones who's halting building u.s. broadband infrastructure because they have a lucrative monopoly on the ISP's creation and communication. Also with Ajit Pai at the wheel they even have MORE incentive to NOT give you broadband and instead charge you for crumbs... They are part of the problem.

Also humanity survived because technology evolves, but it doesn't DISCARD...:stopitslime:

Mark my words when something really bad happens and only landlines and am /fm communication only works you gonna wish y'all still have the tech...:mjpls: You can't trust these corporations to do right by the people, the only thing they care about is making a profit...

Didn't I say telecoms were part of the problem? :heh:

Personally, I'm a warrior monk. Can't wait for the day all this shyt collapses. In the land of the blind, the man with one eye is the king! :ahh:
