Jay-z is the king of placing himself in circles that advances his brand and image. From popular rapper to top urban clothes designer to owner of nets that got them to Brooklyn to now sports agent to keep cano on the Yankees.

Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano has fired the agent Scott Boras and hired an agency founded by Jay-Z, a move that could enhance Cano's chances of returning to the team.

Jay-Z is not only a Yankees fan, but he is also a friend of third baseman Alex Rodriguez, who has been a kind of mentor to Cano. In 2007 Jay-Z helped persuade Rodriguez of the value of staying in New York after he had opted out of his contract. Rodriguez wound up signing a 10-year, $275 million contract to remain with the Yankees.

Cano is making $15 million this year. He will be eligible for free agency when the season ends. His decision to end his relationship with Boras is probably a positive development for the Yankees because Boras has historically taken his clients to free agency rather than have them sign long-term contract extensions with the team they are with.The Yankees would like to arrange such an extension with Cano. With Boras gone, they may have a better chance of doing so.

In an announcement Tuesday, the new agency, Roc Nation Sports, which is affiliated with Creative Artists Agency Sports, said it had signed Cano as its centerpiece and first client.The announcement included a statement attributed to Cano."At this point in my career, I am ready to take a more active role in my endeavors both on and off the field," it read. "I am confident that the pairing of Roc Nation Sports and C.A.A. Sports will be essential in helping me accomplish my short- and long-term goals. I am making this important decision now so I can keep my focus on helping the Yankees succeed in 2013, while minimizing any distractions for me and my teammates."

Established himself as the king of hiphop. put loose change from his right pocket into the Nets, and became the FACE of a project that established Brooklyn as a legitimate contender to MANHATTAN. Now hes using this already steaming sports profile to draw players to him, skimming easy money off their contracts.

At the end of this, what skill did this man really offer ANYBODY? its like turning Dr Suess into a major comglomorate banking corporation CEO.

There has been plenty of speculation that Jay-Z’s new sports management firm resulted in Giants receiver Victor Cruz hiring CAA to negotiate his next contract with the Giants, or whoever he may sign with.

The speculation is accurate. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Cruz hired CAA in anticipation of CAA and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation partnering in the overall representation and management of Cruz’s career.

He does have influence and being able to court a large name like Cano is a big move for him. I would assume that he should be able to grab some NBA players as well. I don't know. Soon as Larry Johnson started fukking with Jay-z, his career simultaneously fell off. He just dissipated off the face of sports and Hov disassociated himself from Johnson soon as that happened.

Nah, he had a 1.47 percent ownership stake till Prokhorov bought in, and everyone's shares where diluted. But ya, it was small, and is even smaller now. But he made out like a bandit for such a small shareholder(1 to 4 million was the rumoured investment in the nets).

What would be interesting is to see what Jay's stake in the Alantic Yards development is.

While the only thing that has been made official thus far is Cruz joining Creative Artists Agency (CAA), ESPN's Adam Schefter has confirmed media reports that Cruz will be a part of the new Roc Nation/CAA venture. Cruz recently hired CAA's Tom Condon to represent him and the expectation is that Condon will negotiate his contract with the Giants.
