masters don't mean shyt if you don't have classic music that movies, commercials, television shows, or people will want to sample in the future. You'll just be in possession of some garbage ass music that was hot for 2 weeks in your era. Think about the bullshyt that's dropping today. How many new artists from this era do you think will be able to get $100+ million for the catalog of shyt they are putting out today?

SoundCloud almost changed the game until labels killed the momentum and XXX dying pretty much ruining SoundCloud's reputation.

I'm surprised Spotify just doesn't create their own distribution wing and cut out the labels altogether.
First and foremost, Spotify makes most of its money from back catalogs. Cut out the labels then they lose access to all that classic music.

That's true and valid, I just believe that Spotify could make alot of money if artists could just pay them to upload their music rather than go through indie distributors like UnitedMasters and Distrokid

How do they make money? Serious question
The artists pay a flat fee annually instead of a percentage of royalties. With volume of 100K songs being added to dsp’s daily, the upload fees add up & the distributor makes money regardless of the success of the song. Additionally, There is extremely low overhead in the digital distribution space, it’s literally just pressing upload! A distribution company these days can be run with less than 10 employees, with no office space just a server.

That nikka lying or he didn't read the fine print. Tunecore is not a free service, particularly if you actually WANT distribution (which is kinda the whole point)
Free & 100/0 aren’t the same thing. Russ’s isn’t saying it should be free, he’s saying the amount charged to put a song on spotify should be the same all across the board (a flat fee>royalties) as it’s all the same process. It’s literally just pressing upload on 2 songs and wanting more money on one song because one song is making more money than the other with no added benefit to the artist from the distributor.

Why are people even linking up with these companies anyway? Distribute the music yourself we're in the internet age, all you need is social media and then you get noticed.

You can’t just upload to Spotify yourself you have to go through a distributor.
These distributors also upload to all the other streaming platforms as well it’s actually a really good service for your average small act.

Dude saying majors already take 15% off top is just mad. That's 15% minimum. You also don't own your masters with them in vast majority of deals. Add that to 360 foolishness and it gets even worse.

the thing I'm :patrice: on is you are relying on them as far as believing their numbers regarding sales and streams.
I like the way you think breh

Affiliation.

It's like WSG said. He was doing everything on his own at first, but once he got calls from Shady and RN, more artists started calling and more opportunities opened up. He said he used both companies to leverage bigger payouts from venues and other labels for features. So for situations like this, just having the stamp on your projects helps to validate you when you're indie.

That's why we see all those people sitting on the gold couch and sh*t and posting those pics on IG. The affiliation moves the needle for a lot of indie acts. WSG said it "worked wonders" for him and Roc Marci, since they signed. Just a quick pic on the couch.
