I see what youre trying to say but I don't really agree

The football equivalent to me is if Aaron Donald led the league in pressures, sacks and FF but his team went 2-15

He can't control his overall team's performance but he was the clear best defender far and away
Off the top of my head, that actually happened, twice!! Cortez Kennedy(RIP) won DPOY for a 2-14 Seahawks team in 91 or 92. Dikk Butkus did it for a 1-13 Bears team in 1969, I think.

You’re not going to win DPOY having a below average team defense. It’s why Wemby didn’t win it this year either.

Facts. To further add to this point

Spurs before they had Wemby in the 2022-2023 season: 22-60 record
Spurs in Wemby's rookie season 2023-2024: 22-60 record

Well deserved, Stifle Tower. Wemby is coming for that record.
Wemby will probably only win it 1 or 2 times. DPOY is mostly reserved for all defense and almost no offense players.

Kawhi won DPOY back to back. After the second one he was comfortably averaging 20 or more a game. He started being looked at as an MVP candidate, so he sort of "graduated" from DPOY.

Same thing will happen to Victor. He probably wins it back to back at some point but his offense is so good that he will quickly graduate to an mvp candidate, which in turn means voters will vote some other defensive player who doesn't have great offense for DPOY, since the award is basically specifically for that.

Think about how great Tim Duncan was defensively. He never won DPOY. Made 15 all defensive teams, was selected first team 8 times, spent half his career playing on a top 5 defense that he spearheaded, but never won DPOY, because he was never looked at as just a defensive player.

This is 100% true, but I will say that if Wemby continues to evolve and starts having freakish block/rim protection numbers, he might be the first to get both DPOY and MVP consideration every year.
