@njburkett7
So we made it through the Lincoln Tunnel and into Manhattan in under four minutes. This was at 5PM on a Saturday night. /search?q=#congestionpricing @mta @AAA_Travel @RidersAlliance @ABC7NY

2/11
@lizzynyc89
Yes, I did too, and I found it very strange and I unlike you, don’t think it’s a a good sign

3/11
@njburkett7
I never said it was a positive or a negative thing. I’m a journalist, that’s not up to me.

4/11
@nyc_tourist
Are you an advocate or journalist? it is not clear.

5/11
@njburkett7
Why would you ask?

6/11
@Izengabe_
Not sure why any New Yorker would be celebrating tourists, shoppers & daytrippers avoiding Manhattan like the plague. Sure we laugh at Bridge & Tunnel folks but NYC depends on their inflow for business & sales tax revenue. This could be economically catastrophic to NY.

7/11
@michaelmiraflor
This is good but also terrible at the same time. People *should* be wanting to come into the city on a Saturday evening. Parts of downtown look like a ghost town now.

8/11
@2thegreat166318
I am a prophet. Check the date on my post.

[Quoted tweet]
Second prediction. The goal of congestion pricing will be retroactively redefined as "to make it easier to drive your car into Manhattan." Kinda ironic but here we are.

9/11
@nycpix
Odd to celebrate no one heading into Manhattan on a Saturday night

Do you think the bridge n tunnel crowd suddenly decided they want to get dressed for a night out and take the ferry?

Come on

Why are you tagging ridersalliance?
As someone else noted: this is why we don’t trust “reporters”

10/11
@Kalyx_triaD
"All those pesky working class, and minorities, and tourists are finally gone. Now I can drive in peace."

11/11
@bankof_amERICA
I think this is dramatic and too soon to tell

Saturday had snow and January is usually dead in NYC

@pourteaux
how i evaded nyc’s congestion tax this morning:

i took the subway ***395 times*** in 2024

3/23
@SeeDaneRun
I evaded it by living in Minneapolis and not needing to commute to a job. Both are good ways.

4/23
@pourteaux
thanks for letting me know!

5/23
@SmallGov4All
Glad you survived.

6/23
@pourteaux
i seem to be having a lucky streak

@_Defiant_One_
You’ll own nothing and be happy

10/23
@pourteaux
inshallah

11/23
@shockcityrocke1
Did you you carry all of the tools and equipment that you needed for the construction site? No. You didn’t. Because you can’t on a train. Nimrod.

12/23
@pourteaux
oh but i did

13/23
@_arshbot
Narrative violation

14/23
@punk7635
Must have erased the train hobos too

15/23
@Ten111Five
No doubt this is the best thing to happen to the city.

16/23
@BallifJed
This man saved $9, with one simple trick. NEW JERSEY HATES HIM!!!

17/23
@DaBachsta
@NYPDTransit arrest this man

18/23
@BeanaXena5872
Wow sooooo coollll

Diabolical!!

21/23
@ihateyouall354
Do you own a car even?

22/23
@Dan100031
not all are as lucky as you Homeless man, 69, won’t face charges after stabbing thugs who terrorized him on subway, killing 1: DA

23/23
@Kenway22046999
You don’t get charged leaving Manhattan.

@coopercooperco
Love that under every image like this there are replies posting “wow ! This must be devastating for those businesses !!” as if every car going down Canal was stopping off at Canal Plastics or something.

[Quoted tweet]
There are blocks of lower Manhattan that are so devoid of cars now it’s wild.

GhNAft7WoAAeeQY.jpg

2/28
@IranianIntifada
Lol this is a block over from an NYU building, they definitely didn’t lose any business. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a car not just pass through

3/28
@stevie12s1
Lets see the data. How are those businesses doing?

4/28
@londonfletsch
Next step: widen the sidewalks.

5/28
@TheOculusOnline
I can't believe a street is packed with people on a weekday afternoon in the dead of Winter. NYC is over.

6/28
@sharpkmcm
Plus the short one-way strip that is University Place never has had much car traffic

Really dislike this kind of annoying dishonesty

7/28
@m_rue425
plus every pic is from the middle of a work day in the coldest part of the year. like, ofc ppl aren’t outside in droves

8/28
@karasmarsh
like where would they have even been parking?

9/28
@holdenberry
Every picture or video I’ve seen that’s showing how “empty” the city is has people walking down sidewalks or people on bikes. It’s so funny that our American brains are just like “no cars mean no people!”

10/28
@stanleymwc
I always park at the garages on either side of Canal near the 5th Precinct/Joe's Shanghai and walk

11/28
@comradeAcid
one strip town ass mindset

12/28
@kingtaay
good thing we banned those dining sheds that were taking away parking spaces for all these cars

13/28
@mmathog
People honesty don’t understand the geometry of cars, a ton of car traffic is nothing people-wise compared to some semi full subways.

14/28
@hanzailar
Same mindset that thinks if a bike lane doesn't have a traffic jam of bikes it therefore is not being used.

15/28
@StevenPBenn
Is the thinking that people are still there, they just got there by other means, or that people in cars don't shop at stores on or near the streets in these images?

16/28
@dianad32163
Ok then where are the people?

17/28
@AgonyNacho
As if that doesn’t increase foot and bike traffic too not having to worry about cars & moronic drivers?

18/28
@CloutKiing23
That’s not canal genius

19/28
@lvey21
Ignorant folks from out of town who have no clue how nyc operates

20/28
@RealJorgeVargas
That’s not Canal.

21/28
@post1_nylifer
Whatever this it is, it is
not the New York that we NYers know and love: a vibrant bustling place. This is dead

22/28
@bestchatrat99
You are retarded

23/28
@27Yeep
I also think it's funny how the same RETVRN trad cons who fetishize old pictures of car-less New York and Chicago are simultaneously really angry about this

24/28
@todaibee28
Really how wide the streets are designed. Compare to streets in Europe or Asia. Just even compare to Boston.

25/28
@Thefalseflags
Get fukked. Just because all you can afford is a bike doesn’t mean everyone should suffer.

26/28
@Hamncheze22
First off yes, they are losing money, secondly the city is losing money, no cars means no payment for metered parking. No meter payments, no money for meter maids. No purchases means no sales tax collections. This hurts the city and state on multiple levels

27/28
@GogolsGhost
Every comment is about the decrease in foot traffic you moron

28/28
@ReadOnlyJones
Why do you think cars were there? So people could cruise around looking at the homeless? They were going places. Doing things. Spending money.

@rtinfow
Odd that the sidewalks are empty since >56% of Manhattan workers take public transportation. Sunday morning?

4/30
@xJonNYC
nope, it was Monday the 13th at 4:25pm

5/30
@xJonNYC
The plural of "anecdote" most definitely isn't "data"-- and I make no such claim. But if ya wanna know what the reality is (aside from hilariously short Waze times in/out of Manhattan lately,)-- far better than that-- ask your friendly local UPS or FedEx driver what's up

6/30
@Archi_icons
This happened in London initially. Its a brief period before ppl get used to the congestion charge, then they come back at a slightly reduced rate, altho now, 20yrs later we're the most congested city in Europe

7/30
@xJonNYC
makes sense for sure.

8/30
@terrykhoyt1
Wow. I just live shotted a Times Square Webcam at noon on Wednesday. Virtually no traffic!

GhWbCX9XwAAAnZS.jpg

9/30
@xJonNYC
I might have been inclined to think this shot was fake at first, but, interesting : https://youtube.com/rnXIjl_Rzy4

10/30
@benduchek
You sound like this is a bad thing. Manhattan should not be a car-centric location. Sorry if that hurts your feelings.

11/30
@xJonNYC
what?? fukk off

12/30
@tjk_9000
riddle me this...

I used to drive into the city for about $3 in tolls, park for $20 using the spothero app.

now if I were to drive down, looks like I could pay the $9 and then just park on the street for a small fee, right?

not a huge difference but still seems viable

13/30
@xJonNYC
well, in this exact example, not really as both sides of University are "no parking" on both sides. Now that is NOT to say there weren't lots of parked and or standing cars on that block previously-- there definitely were. But no actual parking before evening (and weekends)

14/30
@xJonNYC
Some random university place trivia/history

- there used to be a bus on this street

-on the right nearest block was the legendary Cedar Tavern

-Japonica there was one of the first Japanese restaurants in the City

-in this pic you can see the buildings that Alec Baldwin..

15/30
@xJonNYC
..lives/lived in as well as actor Edward Norton (and no doubt dozens of other well-known NYers)

16/30
@xJonNYC
to give just a taste of what's been brewing on University Place lately:
Qatar splurges on plush $9.8M Greenwich Village condo — in latest NYC real estate power move

17/30
@travfed
Feels like a good time to start adding some greenspace + trees.

18/30
@balconysublet
i've worked in the building immediately to the left in your photo for 2+ years and university pl always looked like this

19/30
@LuisEAlfaroM
Nice, such great opportunities

20/30
@Bonecondor
Now? University Place always looks like that?

21/30
@Bhess
What’s the economic activity like?

Have businesses lost business, is it the same, or better?

That’s the real question.

I can’t see getting rid of the people will make it better but we’ll see.

22/30
@tgeisenheimer
This is university place. It runs into Union square and isn’t a major avenue. It’s often lighter in thru traffic as a result.

23/30
@hugo_kemnitz
If Americans now learn to use the bicycle New York become really cool again.

Don’t get me wrong cars are great, but inside of NY walking, cabs or Metro was the best for travelling

24/30
@goshengrove
This is not the win the city thinks it is. Cars not able to go into the city bc of cost just means less people to spend money and visit.

25/30
@LaDeDa82
I thought the point was to collect money for the failing MTA. They said everyone will keep driving and money will be collected. Subway and train fares will go up next because no one is driving in and MTA wants that $$$ 🤣

26/30
@srchingtruth
Bad for the small time business owners that’s for sure.

27/30
@Pizan1260
There’s also no people so things seem to be going well for small businesses.

28/30
@ReinaLove143
Makes sense. New York is beautiful but it’s too crowded and not only that it shouldn’t be the norm to take taxis and not have a vehicle of your own. unfortunately public transportation is the way to go! There is nothing wrong with that and it’ll save the environment

29/30
@gjoseberrios
This is university place and its typically like this at 4:25 on a monday

30/30
@Looler21
Time to go back to outdoor dining areas

in what you read, who absorbed the travel expense ? Did the supplier eat it? Or the business?

Someone has to raise price of their service ? And if so, what company or business here will do the same
What travel experience? If paid wages decreased and fuel costs decreased what is the net increase in expenses in your calculation that we’re supposed to assume anyone had to absorb?

So wages decreased ? Thats good? Fuel cost decrease enough to offset the cost to travel into those zones? And business kept prices stagnant?

I dont know about london or stockholm experiment. Hence why i ask. How did business owners not raise prices if their overhead increased ? Or maybe it didnt.

So you're a Republican now? Or what?
And that right there is the problem with this country

This stupid tribalism shyt

I am not Republican nor will I ever vote for the GOP

But we're at the point where if I'm not giving the DNC a reach around for a new tax or if I don't think a man can get pregnant, I'm a bigot who hates the planet and children and puppies and a whole bunch of other dumb shyt.

This seems like it will backfire tremendously. I hate to say it but major cities are fighting the inevitable:

Office spaces and small businesses in business districts are declining, people can work from home, there’s not enough housing.

Office spaces and small businesses in business districts are declining, People can work from home, there’s not enough housing.

Turn those spaces into apartments and condos :wtf:

It’s inevitable. When the cd player is invented you can love the tape player all you want but it’s over. Old school 9-5 is over. Even if people literally have to not work which this new generation of kids are doing

What would that solve? If the average apartment/condo is $3500/month, who's going to move there?

If you really want to solve the problem, you'd force businesses to spread out into the suburbs so commute times are better.

They must want a republican mayor and governor…

:francis:
You from NYC or drive to Manhattan frequently? This needed to happen YEARS ago. The city is too accessible by public transit for the amount of car traffic coming in to the city making it worse for the people who actually live there.

Not to mention how much better it is for the environment, nikkas are insane if they were actually driving into Manhattan frequently…

I think a certain subset of upper middle class New Yorkers getting to drive into Manhattan made them feel superior to the plebs on the train.

Most upper class New Yorkers I knew used trains (not buses). The ultra rich is obviously a different story.
