I think a certain subset of upper middle class New Yorkers getting to drive into Manhattan made them feel superior to the plebs on the train.

Most upper class New Yorkers I knew used trains (not buses). The ultra rich is obviously a different story.

So this is a tactic by the ultra rich to bleed other people's pockets in the hopes of having the roadways to themselves ?!

Friend of mine is a chef at a midtown hotel and she drives in. Hates congestion pricing. I’ve worked in the city for decades and have never imagined driving in.

I actually think it's about improving public safety from less pedestrians and bikers being hit and less emissions.

The real cause is that people just do not want to pay tolls, whatever they may be called.

A lot of people that were against congestion pricing are now for it. It’s only been 2 weeks though. Only 4% of people that work in Manhattan drive into the city and those people are higher income where they can afford to drive in, own a car, pay for parking, etc. the narrative that this impacts everyday New Yorkers where 96% of people take mass transit or bike or walk, is asinine. It’s usually a lot of city workers, cops, who park with impunity and don’t give a fukk about anyone else that are the loudest about it. You should pay to drive into the city, reduce pollution, make the streets more walkable for the vast majority of pedestrians. It is a strain on small businesses that rely on truck deliveries so they’ll see costs go up a bit. The problem that most people see is not with congestion pricing itself but the fact that the mta is woefully mismanaged and corrupt with seemingly raises every few years and the same shyt 3rd world stations and service.

All these tweets about how empty streets doesnt equate to less consumerism dont get the simple fact that suppliers and wholesalers are not going to foot the bill. And business will neither. Which falls on who again?

Commuters, in and out of the city, are not only paying the toll they will also pay more for what are already high consumer goods and services. Plus the added tax for aforementioned price increase.

An extra $21.60 on a truck making a delivery of thousands of dollars worth of goods should have no appreciable effect on the cost of those goods. It’s in the noise.
