The West has been trying to drum up any excuse they can to declare war on the Syrians for more than a decade now. Between funding proxy armies of jihadists and outright concocting fake gas attacks to blame them on Assad, there is a lot of psychological warfare going on from both sides. The Russians are supporting the Assad regime, and we're funding rebel groups that are battling them as well as having our special operations forces on the ground.

This may very well be the spark in the proverbial powderkeg they've been looking for.
