Why would China help them when they know they are next once this war is wrapped up?
I don’t see what leverage Turkey has except the Montreux Convention which would do them more harm than good abandoning it.
Russia has become heavily dependent on China as a trading partner, energy customer, and source of industrial goods and technology. Additionally, China's global diplomatic weight means its stance on the Ukraine conflict carries importance for Russia's international position. Beijing has maintained a formally neutral posture while providing economic lifelines to Russia, positioning it as a potential mediator.
China has expressed concern about nuclear escalation and territorial integrity principles that align with Ukraine's interests. Zelenskyy has made some overtures to China because of their neutrality and influence over Moscow. There hasn't been a breakthrough, of course, but the Ukrainians need to be thinking outside of the box here.
ErdoÄŸan's ability to maintain diplomatic and economic ties with Russia while simultaneously supporting Ukraine militarily through drone sales and other assistance gives Turkey credibility with both sides. Turkey's NATO membership further enhances its influence, as it can affect alliance positions while maintaining its independent foreign policy. Rather than abandoning the Montreux Convention, Turkey has wielded its geographic position alongside its diplomatic flexibility to carve out a distinct role in the conflict that neither Russia nor Ukraine can easily dismiss.
