Going back to the messages that Ryan Coogler put in the film, I found it interesting that
after the vampires left the first time, the Black people organized & started getting ready for a SHTF situation. It was the Asian woman who lost her ish and invited the vampires back in.
Maybe my tin foil kufi is on too tight, but that seemed like Coogler saying that Black people know how to survive jacked up times (like our current political/economic times). We know how to struggle. When other groups face adversity, they can't handle the pressure.
Or...am I reaching?

You hit the nail on the head. Out of all Ryan’s movies, I think this one showed his limitations as a writer more than any before. 3 major scenes stood out to me as clunky and poorly done, that I know most ppl loved

1. The music time set piece. Completely took me out of the movie. Thought it was corny, campy, and didnt flow at all with the movie before or after. Felt like Ryan just had a vision for it and was gonna put it in regardless. I can dive deeper into why I don’t like it, but overall just as you said, it was disjointed imo.

2. The post credit scene. This was probably the most damaging part of the movie honestly. It makes the vampires way too human. To give Stack the ability to have the self control to listen to Smoke and just leave Sammie alone and live his life with his girl makes it seem like the vampires were right all along. Like what are the actual downsides of being a vampire if your faculties are still with you and you can choose good? Like you’re a soulless, blood thirsty vampire right? If not, we gotta have a discourse lol. Just seemed to step on any type of good vs evil of the vampire vs humans theme. Once again, thought the scene was unnecessary and tacked on and more of Ryan just having a really cool scene he wanted to use vs one really necessary for the overall story.

3. Smoke killing the KKK was just some gratuitous, “I want my Django” moment type shyt. I love seeing some clansman get fukked up in a movie, don’t get me wrong. But this was sooooo forced and goofy that it actually pissed me off. And Coogler is a much better writer than this. Once again this scene felt tacked on, instead of truly woven into the story. Like we got a picture of a clans gown and one sentence from the main vampire of set up. Why would the clansmen not go on a night raid, when the juke would be packed with nikkas, to attack? They wait until morning, when it’s all cleared up? Why? If he wanted this scene, I feel like story wise, he could’ve easily elevated that whole showdown. Instead we just get a cheap, tacked on scene, meant to be a suicide. Disappointing. Lowkey, I feel like Ryan looked ant the movie and was like “damn, we really just killed like 40 nikkas to 3 white ppl. That doesn’t sit well with me. Let’s even it out :banderas: “.
Bruh….
when the long lost Parliament member appeared, in my head I was saying “I really hope Coogler isn’t about to do what I think he’s doing..:skip:

Soon as the DJ and Dhalism with the happy feet got introduced I was :snoop::dead:

That scene and the KKK scene you’re talking about are PERFECT examples of Coogler having an idea in his head and no matter how the accompanying scenes flow, it’s going in the movie no matter what.

40 to 3 is crazy :russ:

He really said this build up that I carefully and meticulously worked on for the first hour…the fukk these crackas at tho :russ: They don’t need no damn pacing or structure.

Grenade bytch :russ:

When they appeared, half of me shared similar thoughts; “why are they here in the daytime conveniently when the battle at night was over”, other half “how long the uber gonna take I gotta get me some wings :mjlit:

Also I didn’t stay for the post credit scene but reading that makes me happy I didn’t lol. Ryan really gotta lock in with some A1 writers because pretty much damns the entire point of the vampires in the film.

So essentially they have free will….to have free will, but none of that was explained or shown for the overarching story but using MBJ traveling around as filler was a necessity :dead:

This was maybe Michael B. Jordan's best performance.

However, hypothetically lets say they werent twins. And you know Ryan gonna give him a role. Which role would you kept him as (Smoke or Stack) and who would have fit well as the other brother (Not Jonathan Majors)

Smoke feels more natural for MBJ. I like the no-nonsense approach to everything.

Seems to me you went in this ready to hate. Saying it doesn't take any risks in a setting of where strong masculine black men are represented in the deep south wiping out craKKKaz and it's not appreciated is crazy to me. Saying a musical scene that connects the lineage and influences of BLACK MUSIC throughout generations took you out of the film or had no payoff? You are basically hating and not respecting the visualization of black American culture in its purest form.

@gluvnast

My brother thats what they do.

But fear not, we winning we on the right side of history!!

Im not a movie person at all ..Last shyt I’ve seen in theatres was Black Panther 1 :mjlol:

I feel it’s impossible to tell a good story in 2 hours and the rushed second half of this movie just reinforced that feeling .

I absolutely loved the first half..The character building was excellent and all the actors did their thing ..

The dance break/musical stuff took me out …not because it was music but adding in the “sounds of the future” with Bootsy and hip hop was just odd.If they wanted to include a scene like that just have it on some ancestors shyt and it would’ve been cool.

The second half was mid ..felt rushed. Once the action died down I started to love the love the movie again..The kid scene/post credit scene was very good ..overall I’ll give it a 7.5/10 but like I said that’s mostly because I’m not a movie guy to begin with . I can easily see how some people can have it at a 9 or so.

Not sure how to feel about this film :patrice: I loved the first part of it (specifically the world building), but it's like he didn't know what to do with the build-up in the 2nd half. Just felt like it dragged a bit. Music scenes also took me out. I thought the performances were all good though. It's a 7/10 off of first watch.

Just left the screening. As much as I love Coogler, I tried to temper my expectations going in due to all the hype - also not a fan of Michael B so him playing duel leads made me weary…..

10/10. Had it a cool 8 to 8.5 until:

Smoke marked out those KKK p*ssyholes at the end of the movie - added an extra point for that and a half point for Stack turning up in the 90s rocking a Coogi sweater and a high top :russ:

In all seriousness, it’s definitely a solid 8.5 to 9/10.

Michael B’s performances as Smoke and Stack :wow: For me, this is his arrival on the big stage - ate the screen with the fukk up playing both roles. Bro needs two Oscar nominations - one for each role lol. Needs to leave that safe Will Smith shyt behind now and let his nuts hang on some villain shyt.

Ryan Coogler is also now in blank cheque territory with Nolan, Villeneuve and them - masterful filmmaking. The musical set piece in the second act was executed to perfection - almost had tears my eyes :mjcry:

The only thing I would hold against it is that a lot of the core horror elements of the movie I could see coming a mile away but the parts mentioned in the spoiler were a nice bookend.

This movie certified that Coogler is a genius but we already knew that.
