I loved it!

It’s basically telling a story about how white ppl always tryna force themselves into OUR spaces.

A when they are let in, they corrupt, STEAL IT and destroy it.

My homie said the theme is dont invite or include white people to the party :russ:

Even buying the joint from the white man was a bad idea if they never let the vampires in. Smh inherently evil people even the vampires knew they wasnt shyt

watched it again this afternoon with this girl, so that's twice in 24 hours. This time, I got to critique it a bit more.
> Solid 7.5 - 8/10. I really dialed in on the dialogue and some other things.
> Watching it a second time, I focused on what I saw as the flaws. The second half of the movie is still the weak point.

I can't get over how poorly written the villain is. His motives aren't really clear. Yes, he wants the preacher, but is it to free his ancestors, or what? It made zero sense to me.
> The Native Americans should've come back and saved people at the end; that went nowhere. I thought they were setting us up for their return.
> The vampire logic towards the end of the movie is dumb. There are like 20+ vampires outside and 6 people inside when the barn opens. They all should have died within, like, one minute, lol. Suddenly, the vampires just start standing around? Lol, what?
> the visual of the guitar scene is pretty cool. Blending past feature and present together. But it has zero impact on the story or anything, it's just a visual, it's like a music video super overhyped.
That theme goes nowhere in with the plot at all.

I can agree with the main antagonist or villain is weak, but how can you say the motives aren't clear? HE'S A VAMPIRE!! It's cut and dry, there's no special or deep narrative motivation for his or any other vampire's actions. What do you think what a vampire does? We do not need anything to justify. That said, the so-called main vampire isn't the strongest, I agree.

Not really much of a spoiler because I agree nothing happened, but the Choctaw Indians was pointless but implied a backstory that we never received. My suspicions for this as well as any other nitpicks is that there's a HUGE director's cut that had to be edited out because of runtime requirements. This movie feels like a 4hr film that had to be cut down to 2hrs. There are several editing scenes that were noticeable to me that felt it meant to be longer. The Choctaw Indians is definitely one of them, I believe.

I suspended belief on vampire logic because there's vampires, mythical beings. I do get what you are saying, because you see several examples of them having hive-like minds and shared memories. But I do know that goes along with death, or so-called death since they're technically already dead and resurrected as undead monsters with the thirst of blood. Vampires aren't ever logical ever since the creation of Dracula. The Dracula story in itself isn't based on anything logical nor anybody try to think of it from a logical or logistical aspect. So, Ryan Coogler has a creative license in doing whatever he wants to tell his story.

I TOTALLY DISAGREE with the pivotal musical number of the film. And the opening sequence of the movie explains that scene, giving it foreshadowing to what can happen. For people who do not appreciate the power of music and how transcendental music can be through multiple cultures and generations, especially the power of BLACK MUSIC, I understand how it doesn't impact it to you narratively. However, it's WHY WE HAVE A VAMPIRE HORROR MOVIE to begin with. And the reason why the movie is called SINNERS. And I believe people who aren't religious, who aren't theologians, who are disconnected with any spirituality, I believe that scene going over their heads as it went over your head. And the main theme is how LUCIFER, the DEVIL swarmed around that juke joint. Lucifer's power is music and how that demon fallen angel uses music to attract the evil presence and corrupt the innocent minds. It's THAT SCENE that attracted the vampires. It's why Preacher Boy's father who's a Baptist minister condemned Preacher Boy's desire to play the blues because it is viewed as devils' music. The scene itself showcases how connected black music is. Black music is American music. We care the creators of all the popular musical genres. The bluesman is connected to the hip hop DJ. All international cultures are linked to its tribal origins. With THIS attracts the evil presence.

As for the overall theme, the movie is a love letter to the blues. The blues is paramount throughout the movie. The movie geography is Clarksdale, Mississippi. This location is well known for its area called "THE CROSSROADS". The Crossroads is the folklore of the bluesman by the name of Robert Johnson who supposedly made a deal with the devil to because the GOAT blues singer. The spiritual and religious allegories surround this film.

I really liked that critique on mixed/white passing people trying to use their privilege in both spaces.

This film is definitely gonna rub some people the wrong way. I was sat next to a white couple and every now then, I would look over to see how they were reacting to the scenes :lolbron:
when i was watching a white couple walked out right after
they killed the main vampire

this Hammer at 63…. so it’s Crazy some of hall saying Coogler won’t live to see his movie come back to him
That was some real hating shyt imo. Scorsesee/Spielberg making movies well into their 70/80s. Coogler seems healthy, no reason he cant be doing shyt for the next 30-40 years. Spike Lee pushing 70 and still doing his thing.

You hit the nail on the head. Out of all Ryan’s movies, I think this one showed his limitations as a writer more than any before. 3 major scenes stood out to me as clunky and poorly done, that I know most ppl loved

1. The music time set piece. Completely took me out of the movie. Thought it was corny, campy, and didnt flow at all with the movie before or after. Felt like Ryan just had a vision for it and was gonna put it in regardless. I can dive deeper into why I don’t like it, but overall just as you said, it was disjointed imo.

2. The post credit scene. This was probably the most damaging part of the movie honestly. It makes the vampires way too human. To give Stack the ability to have the self control to listen to Smoke and just leave Sammie alone and live his life with his girl makes it seem like the vampires were right all along. Like what are the actual downsides of being a vampire if your faculties are still with you and you can choose good? Like you’re a soulless, blood thirsty vampire right? If not, we gotta have a discourse lol. Just seemed to step on any type of good vs evil of the vampire vs humans theme. Once again, thought the scene was unnecessary and tacked on and more of Ryan just having a really cool scene he wanted to use vs one really necessary for the overall story.

3. Smoke killing the KKK was just some gratuitous, “I want my Django” moment type shyt. I love seeing some clansman get fukked up in a movie, don’t get me wrong. But this was sooooo forced and goofy that it actually pissed me off. And Coogler is a much better writer than this. Once again this scene felt tacked on, instead of truly woven into the story. Like we got a picture of a clans gown and one sentence from the main vampire of set up. Why would the clansmen not go on a night raid, when the juke would be packed with nikkas, to attack? They wait until morning, when it’s all cleared up? Why? If he wanted this scene, I feel like story wise, he could’ve easily elevated that whole showdown. Instead we just get a cheap, tacked on scene, meant to be a suicide. Disappointing. Lowkey, I feel like Ryan looked ant the movie and was like “damn, we really just killed like 40 nikkas to 3 white ppl. That doesn’t sit well with me. Let’s even it out :banderas: “.

I called coogler a hack( in jest) for those very reasons you mentioned. He has great ideas but terrible execution. I loved the idea of this film more than the actual film. But at the end of the day he knows his audience and they are easily impressed and don't even care to see the large plot holes and issues you pointed out. Everyone doesn't have a sophisticated pallet to appreciate a 5 star restaurant. A lot of people are really actually basic and just like mcdonald's and it is what it is. So coogler is serving them up the half baked mid they like and I love that for him.

I agree with your assessment on the klan scene. It was indeed gratuitous and tacked on but that was the point imo. He knows some people just want to see that and will give it 10/10 for that klan scene and the music montage scene regardless of whether it makes any sense or is out of place in the movie.

I think a dope full circle moment would have been if sammies music brought not just the vampires to the juke joint but the indians and klansmen all heard it and came at the same time and then we had a big royal rumble with everyone fighting each other. But when you had 5 people verse 20 vampires at the end they should have all been killed in 5 seconds based off all the vampires previous kills.
