Finally saw this. Have a homie who is connected to Coogler so I was kind of hesitant to check it out, because he wanted my feedback and he knows I'm super honest and critical in my thinking.

Have to say, I respect the hell out of his ambition with this film. He took a vampire movie - a popcorn flick, really - and tried to make it subversive and multi-genre... made it a sort of parable about Yaqub... an interrogation of assimilation, exploitation of artists, cyclical socialized violence... and he even killed a bunch of white men on the big screen, which they don't allow a negro character to do all that often (see: Rebel Ridge).

Did he succeed on all fronts? No. But he made the attempt. He made a very ambitious attempt. I respect a big swing, even if he didn't knock it out the park. Quality film, kudos to Coogler for openly subverting the industry while banking off it. Rare shyt.

That acting school in London must be amazing

And it’s not just black people

The guy that plays dr strange

The guy that plays spider man the young kid

Lots of them

Can’t lie they have amazing talent

When I found out Daniel was British

His mannerisms here I SEEN on the block In Brooklyn growing up

It’s that “oh you don’t like my face” look before they try and rob you

:ohhh:

Those are to cool kids btw

Delroy Lindo( Delta Slim in the movie) is also English

i really enjoyed this movie. my only issue is that it felt like 3 different movies supercut into one. the first part - house party in jim crow mississippi was my favorite part. if they could have done a complete movie on the juke joint hopping, that would have been dope. the vampire part dope, but there felt like a lot of lore exists and we dont know any of it. mainly the chocktaws involvement with hunting them and where they were when all this shyt was going down at the juke joint. the main antagonist was way more empathetic than he should have been the last part with the klan felt totally unneeded, but it was dope to see the fukkers get massacred.

im gonna need to see it again. one criticism that ive seen is that someone said this is like the black version of from dusk til dawn, which i dont know what movie they were watching, because outside of being vampires, i dont see the comparison in the slightest. does coogler plan on turning this into a series? it feels like he didnt answer things so he can deal with them later
Nah, it def felt like a less camp from dust till dawn. But not in a rip off way, just could feel the influence

Two criminal brothers that end up fighting monsters in a nightclub and have to survive the night alongside a crew of people

The gecko brothers were less sympathetic though. Especially Tarantino character :scusthov:

Wish the native american vampire hunters had came back into the plot though. Would've made more sense for them to fill in smoke on the lore and give us more of an idea of where remmick came from

Cause he literally just drops into the movie. Yeah, I get sammie's music drew him to the juke joint, but still feels like a lot got glossed over :patrice:

My only real gripe with the film. Crazy how it's a two hour film but still feels like a lot was rushed. I feel like it's hot great performances across the board as well as scenes, but it would've been better as a TV series. That way we could've gotten more time with each character

Like how Mary and stack didn't get much development once they turned. I feel like there's a lot there to explore but it simply just wasn't enough time to fit it in.

daniel is the best young black actor on planet earth

flawless accent

you would think the man was wakandan

:hubie:

naw, hes not on aldis hodges level, and ill stand on that. he killed it in underground

but then again, i dont really see the hype in a lot of modern uk actors. none of them are putting on clinics like daniel day lewis did as christy brown in my left foot

i mean you can break down a lot of things to their bare elements to make them sound similar, but smoke and stacks motivations, reasoning for the club, even the vampires themselves work on a different time than those in from dusk til dawn. sinners has more of an air of the supernatural than from dusk til dawn as well. with the juju bags, the invitations. the only thing skipped from traditional vamp lore from what we know is that remmick can cross running water. but theres more to the vampires here than the chaos snake vampires from FDTD. and its mainly done so some sour cats can call sinners a ripoff

i take it you've seen him in get out.

hodges only real weakness is that he hasnt been in anything with real notoriety put behind it. its a shame underground was so...underground.
