He wasn't going to be a Goldberg type phenomenon but he was well on his way to being one of the more over guys in the company. They needed to either give him the strap or just not book him in the title match. Rock/Punk was basically written in stone so they needed to just wait it out probably.. you gotta strike while the iron is hot though. You can't put him in the match and then not put him over. Killed him dead.
He shouldn't have gotten that match in the first place knowing that neither Ryback nor Punk could lose at that point, let him cook in the midcard before giving him a title shot
if anything the constant beatdowns from the Shield with little retaliation, the loss to Mark Henry at WM (don't care how many fans he has on here Ryback should've won that), and becoming a "monster of the month" for Cena killed him just as much as HIAC 12.
