If you mean series, then probably...actually this isn't a bad thought exercise at all. I'd throw Speed Racer in there, but that wasn't as popular.

Before series got made the OVAs/movies were the thing. Record of Lodoss War was one of the early ones I came across.

I'll put it like this.

If Dragonball Z is Nas' Illmatic

Sailor Moon was Rakim's Paid in Full.

The 90s was kind of a transitional period for Anime. It was a niche but it was growing. Yes there were other Animes on television but Sailor Moon was a major commercial success. They had action figures, video games etc. It had also helped because it was a franchise that catered to girls.

Yes DBZ and Pokemon opened the floodgates but Sailor Moon opened the door to the idea that Anime was commercially viable in the West.

Yeah, you're gonna have to specify anime vs Japanimation. Looking through the vault and Silverhawks came out in '86, one of a few "westernized" series that had the actual animation work done by Japanese or Korean animators.

And how the heck did I forget Akira. :snoop:

this the show that originally got me hooked on toonami before i knew about Gundam

I used to watch Teknoman that came on early in the morning:heh:.

Mutant spider crabs? Really:snoop:?

The only anime dudes at my school was checking for was DragonBallz. But im a 80s baby to be clear, anime wasnt popular back then.
I didnt have the patience to watch a bunch of episodes of dudes staring at each other. Trembling as they talk about the villians power. Only to throw one fireball every 3 episodes:mjlol:

I remember watching SM a few times in the morning before school as a kid but it wasn't the gateway drug that got me into anime. That was probably Ninja Scroll & DBZ. I think people forget how big Gundam Wing was in it's time.

U could cop Ghost in the Shell at Blockbuster back in the day too
