The muslim world was so far ahead of europe for almost all of history. They are the ones that burned books and decided math was the devil. Waaaaay before the conditions of white supremacy arose.

People in the past did not find a conflict between secular and religious, the west did and they dealt with the problems of Christianity and modernity by rejecting religion and limiting the power of the church.
Once they did that they progressed.
They then conquered our lands and then our minds and exported their reasoning and thinking to us.
When Al Khawarizmi was studying the science of maths, he was also a hafiz of the Qur'an (memorized the whole thing) like all Muslims scholars and men of science. He also studied hadith and tafsiir.. The concept of secular knowledge and religious knowledge did not exist in Islam it is a totaly alien product.
For example, as Somalis we did not have this conflict as well, we were nomads and had our own natural laws that evolved with us through thousands of years: our "xeer". When we became Muslims the laws that conflicted with Sharia were thrown out but most of them were kept. Sharia was then assimilated into our laws.
Let me add this strange fact.
Israel from its creation until 1980 used the Ottoman law as the basis for its laws..
Now consider this, Ottoman law was mostly Sharia from top to bottom, from commercial law to family law and it was the only place in the world practicing Sharia as every other Muslim country was under European occupation and under European Law.
Due to the Saudi oil money, the legacy of colonialism, you have very narrow thought processes in the Muslim world. We have a lot of Muslims who are versed in technical skills like being engineers, doctors, etc. But there's a dearth of Muslims involved in the humanities.
But I think its changing as more younger Muslims assimilate to their western homes with their religion. Taking what's good and rejecting what's not good.
As far as people like Sam Harris or the OP, they can hate Islam all they want The Qur'an ain't going anywhere, neither is the Sunnah. And Muslims are still in abundance.

People keep talking that "golden age of islam" bullshyt under the Ottomans and the persians...yet ironically those people would probably have been executed as heretics by the sharia govts of today because of their positions on science,human rights and freedom of speech and religion..
