There's a very old quote (Ryan Coogler even included a version of it in his phenomenal movie Sinners) that says (I'm paraphrasing, too) "white people love Black culture, but they don't love Black people". Therefore, they can accept somebody wearing the Black uniform (our fashion, our slang, our music, etc.), but those things are more palatable if they're not attached to a Black face. To some, a white guy dressed like a rapper and/or a Samoan with locs in his hair and slugs in his mouth is much more tolerable (and will usually be elevated higher ) than an actual Black man with the same presentation.
