UPDATE: Florida State special teams coordinator Eddie Gran is considered one of the top recruits in the South. And Gran is now on the radar as a candidate for the Southern Miss opening according to Bruce Feldman of CBSSports.com.
Gran is a well respected assistant coach with stops at Tennessee, Auburn, Ole Miss and Cincinnati before he landed in Tallahassee. But hes never been given the opportunity to be a head coach. A potential offer from Southern Miss to lead his own program may be enough lure him away from Florida State.

UPDATE: If Southern Miss has North Carolina offensive coordinator Blake Anderson as the top candidate to fill its recent vacancy, it should just offer him the position now.
"Sources tell us that North Carolina offensive coordinator Blake Anderson has no plans to 'interview' for the head job at Southern Miss; but would accept it if offered," FootballScoop.com reported.

Ellis Johnson has reportedly been dismissed as the head coach of Southern Miss after only one season at the helm. Johnson's squad finished 0-12 less than a year after Southern Miss won the Conference USA championship under the guidance of Larry Fedora. Southern Miss brass may look towards North Carolina -- where Fedora currently resides -- to find its next head coach.
"Sources close to the situation tell me that Southern Miss AD Jeff Hammond will contact North Carolina offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Blake Anderson if the athletic department decides to make a change with head coach Ellis Johnson," Pete Roussel of CoachingSearch.com wrote.
Anderson has a long history with the program having served as an assistant in Hattiesburg the previous four seasons before following Fedora to Chapel Hill.
"Former Southern Miss offensive coordinator Blake Anderson is 'interested in becoming a head coach one day, but wants best fit for him,'" Patrick Magee of Sun Herald tweeted.
Middle Tennessee State defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix and Murray State head coach Chris Hatcher each interviewed for the job last off season and could be in the mix again this time. Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart was interested at the time, but it's unlikely he'd want to turn around the program at this juncture.
