Vice President Pence and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos visited a school system in North Carolina last week where they praised its educators for reopening in-person classes amid the coronavirus pandemic. A week later, a school in the reopened system has had to ask teachers and students to quarantine after a fourth-grader tested positive for COVID-19.

"We're here today because to open up America, we've got to open up America's schools and Thales Academy is literally in the forefront," Pence reportedly said. "We really do believe that it's in the best interest of our children to be back in the classroom."

On Wednesday, teachers in Georgia’s largest school district returned to campuses to start in-person planning for the fall semester. By the next day, 260 district employees had been barred from entering their schools, either because they tested positive for the coronavirus or had been directly exposed to someone who had.

Gwinnett County’s teachers and school administrators are hardly alone in dealing with the fallout of an early outbreak as they try to launch a digital-only return.
