fukk outta here

:camby:

nope, he did.

and i wasn't even anticipating it, but decided to check it out and was surprised.. I fukk with Q more overall as an artist and rapper but in terms of both projects.. Trap Lord is more cohesive and better musically. it has a theme musically and isn't all over the place and didn't need re-sequencing.

Wiz does big tours, still doing somewhat respectable numbers, and is about to drop his 3rd album, he lost the casual fanbase he had after he dropped Kush & OJ yeah, but gained a new fanbase after he dropped Rolling Papers (Black & Yellow in particular)

Though Thank Me Later wasn't as good as So Far Gone imo, people knew what type of artist they were buying into and the type of music they'd get with the half singing, half rapping, all harmonizing which made it a major success and propelled him on top of rap.

For a rap album, yes, Schoolboy did drop an amazing record, shyt was golden. Being a better debut than the artists listed (outside of Little Sean :mjpls:), don't think so. He tried in certain songs to appeal to a different crowd (Hell of a Night, Studio) and don't think he succeeded. What makes those debut albums so great is their easy transition for the listener who doesn't listen to rap.
While I agree with you I think youre underestimating the effects of extraneous factors. The success of the album doesnt always reflect the quality or commercialism of the music; its ability to garner more listeners.

You cant tell me Man of the Year isn't a song capable of doing just that. TDE dropped the ball on that one. Even Collard Greens is a good single.

You cant tell me Hell of a night couldnt have made a push given the current EDM wave ala ASAP Rocky's Skrillex joint

The promotion just wasnt sufficient. The push wasnt there

Big Sean had the Kanye cosign (after MBDTF when Kanye was the #1)
Kendrick had Dr Dre cosign and AN IMMENSE amount of spotlight. IMMENSE. Perfect example of the hype machine.

Drake had the Wayne cosign, was already a celebrity and again...immense spotlight/ He shouldnt even be in this discussion because obviously a rapper singer is gonna have more appeal. Its like comparing Big Krit to Future.

Wiz's 2nd album still hasnt even gone Gold. He went to Stargate for that hit and it worked...but he hasnt susltained the fan base. Next album will be another weedplate.

Dudes are talking about SBQ like he Danny Brown though. In any case, this album is better than any others debut mentioned and thats what the OP is discussing

nyc.
Im going to have to disagree.

Asap Fergs album released in august was better than this.

better production consistently, more cohesive, better features (aside from rae on blind threats) and a cool middle eastern vibe mixed with bone thugs and trap :banderas:

Man of the Year? Nah

Hell of a Night? Maybe most likely, just because of the new EDM wave. I fully expect to hear that song remixed at a rave after the album is out for a minute. Just keep in mind, labels nowadays are just gonna put a majority of their money behind one marquee artist, so promotion for 2nd string artists won't have as much money behind it.

But we'll have to agree to disagree on this album being better than the others mentioned. Great as this album is, I just don't think it tops the others

Nope.

:laff: I just hope you weren't part of the "b-b-but why would you expect a GKMC quality album from Q" plea copping brigade when nikkas were calling it trash in the album thread. Posts like this is the reason for the hyperbole and these gifs

Breh you're a good poster and we typically see eye to eye so i dunno...if you think Thank me Later, Finally Famous and Rolling Papers are better albums than oxymoron, you have a shyt opinion. Simply. Thank me later okay...but the others?? nah

Oddly enough I like this better than GKMC even if it isnt better by consensus. GKMC lost its replay value fairly quickly for ME. Listening to it for me is like reading a book for the second time. Maybe because it was so exposed to the mainstream that it got played out but I dunno. I vividly remember being on the subway ride home listening to it the day it leaked for the first time. Geeked the fukk out, I was mesmerized by Money Trees and bytch Dont Kill my Vibe and thought Maad City was dope. The rest I was underwhelmed by. A nikka heard Westside right on time, Cartoons and Cereal, The Recipe Swimming Pools and thought Kendrick was gonna do it. I expected a 10/10 album and didnt get it.

Money Trees I played out. Real and Good Kid grew on me and are actually the only songs I still play along with Collect Calls. Sing about me/dying of thirst is an amazing song but its not something I'm typically in the mood to listen to...its drowsy.

Track 1 is okay. Track 4 is a dope concept but the beat is shyt as with many other songs. Poetic Justice is . Backseat Freestyle I actually fukk with hard. Compton was disappointing...I expected a Why You Hate the Game, Lord Knows level just blaze track but didnt get it. There were too many skits too but they help the story so whatever. At least make them sep. track numbers so nikkas can skip them.

People act like Good Kid Maad City is some groundbreaking shyt but its so far from that. It's a solid 8/10 album and Section 80 at its high points is better. Spiteful Chant (just so happens SBQ murdered Ken on it) is better than any song on GKMC. ADHD too. It's not better than the Documentary if were keeping it really real.

Overall...here are the marquee major label debuts to come out recently

Dreams and Nightmares
Long Live Asap
Good Kid maad City

Big Sean's trash
Thank me Later
Rolling Papers
Man on the Moon
Stoned Immaculate

Based on a TRU story

Maybe i'm missing a couple more...but the bolded are the only ones on the same level quality wise. And GKMC is the only one better. That being said I didnt expect an album like GKMC. That's a concept album. I expected an album like Habits and Contradictions and he delivered.

I agree with labels promoting one dude...but recognize that as being the reason for why Schoolboy's music may not have far extending reach. TDE correctly chose Kendrick to be the labels poster boy but Schoolboy Q should be in the shadow of him and other rappers who are the faces of their respective labels.

I dont even know what you and i are arguing to be honest :heh:. Were on similar pages.

Maybe I'm just tired of hearing bland, soft music. Yall can have Drake, gimme Freddie and Schoolboy Q

Thank Me Later as an album is better than Oxymoron. So is Sideline Story. Schoolboy Q just isn't that unique as an MC, personality, or lyricist, and some of those beats were HELLA questionable....
