Do You Want More?! is still my favorite Roots album
He contributed like 3-4 songs to Do You Want More. He did contributed one song to Illadelph Halflife. I don't have the liner notes in front of me, but if Wiki holds up, his biggest contributions were to When Things Fall Apart and Tipping Point (his influence is all over this one).
Scott Storch as a producer is somewhat overrated. He forever gets respect for breaking Chris Brown as an artist, what he did for Beyonce's debut, co-production with Dre and Timbaland, his work with Mario and Christina Aguilera.
Why is he overrated? People often overstate his contributions. There are people who credit him with songs he didn't contribute to on Dre's 2001. People who think he was the genius behind Dre. When they had Malik B, the balance was perfect. First time I heard them, was the video for "Distortion To Static", as a kid. I remember going to Tower Records, to find the cassette for the single, the very next day. LOL!!
Thought and Malik B had really dope chemistry. And DYWM? was the first album I copped from them, so I always favored that one. But some days, I feel like Illadelph Halflife might be my favorite too. I've always been back and forth with that.

I just re-watched as many of the early Roots videos as I could think of and he's not in any of em as far as I could see. He's not in 'What They Do' or 'Proceed' or 'Distortion To Static' or 'You Got Me' or 'Next Movement' or 'Clones' or 'Concierto of the Desperado' - not in any them videos. There is a light skin black dude in almost all them videos playing the keys or in the background. just looked him up and his name is Kamal, apparently he joined the Roots in 94 to replace Scott Storch.
so, if that dude replaced Scott Storch before they even put out 'Do You Want More?!??' in 95, then what are we even talking about???

eh, it was probably a bad day. First time I met BT was in 95, and one of my old bosses was an early manager. I've done at least a half dozen shows with them in the past, and they were usually pretty chill; I was never a fan of Kamal. I remember them playing Yale Spring Break one year; they were opening (lol) for Jimmy Eat World. JEW had some really nice gear (tons of Orange amps, nice mics, light package, etc), and the Roots asked if they could share some backline to save time on the changeover. Well, those punk as white boys threw a fit. The Roots were like, "oh word?" and just went about meeting up their shyt. The show started and the DESTROYED it. They had the whole quad jumping. They finished, and at least 2/3 of the crowd just BOUNCED. Those Jimmy cats came out to crickets, we were fukking dying laughing. Arrogant pricks.
It's weird that Malik got kicked out for smoking crack when according to Quest other members also smoked crack.

He left in between Illadelph dropping & recording Things Fall Apart, even though he had already working on the album. But he's Organix, Do You Want More, Illadelph Halflife era. We had known his name from the album credits, but had also heard that he wasn't with them anymore by the time Things Fall Apart was in motion. The story went that he didn't like the touring aspect, or their recording/producing process. Kamal was the one that took his job, from touring to the studio. Hell, the band members had changed like 2x since Do You Want More, even more if you count Organix.
I think How I Got Over is their second best album, after Illadelph. The Jam Boys picked up the slack left by Malik B.
