People are obviously missing Pippen's overall comment. Pippen was never viewed as a viable DPOY candidate because the media was fixated on Jordan and him being the anchor of their defense and not Pippen. We see that in the league today where a lot of dudes are taken serious as DPOY candidates as people view other members of their team as the key to their defense. If you don't believe it, look over there at Boston and Robert Williams who doesn't get the credit for what he means to Boston's defense.

Then Jordan would have stolen Pippen's first place votes, and another user has already checked that. Even giving pippen Jordan's votes, he wasn't beating the people that won that year.
