Bob Stoops takes shot at SEC defenses
Stoops noted that now there were a few good QBs in SEC, their vaunted defenses were struggling. In an interview where Oklahoma Sooners head football coach Bob Stoops was asked about the state of the Big 12, he took the opportunity to take a shot at the SEC.
“A few years ago we [the Big 12] had all the quarterbacks and now all of a sudden we can play a little better defense and some other people can’t play defense,” said Stoops. “Funny how people can’t play defense when there’s pro-style quarterbacks over there.”
The quote is a little vague, but he seemed to be implying that, now that there were a few good quarterbacks in the SEC, the conference’s vaunted defenses seemed to be struggling.
Any doubts that Stoops might not have been talking about the SEC were clarified a moment later, when a reporter brought up that the SEC now had two quarterbacks ranked in the top ten in efficiency.
“How’s that happening playing all those SEC defenses?” Stoops asked the reporters. “I still don’t know how A&M was third in the country in total offense and scoring offense playing all those SEC defenses. I have no idea how that happened.
“Oh, they’ve got a quarterback, that’s right.”
Shots fired!
Stoops has gone on record about his problems with the public perception of the SEC being the best conference in college football, but those quotes were always prompted by questions about the SEC. This came out of nowhere — the initial question simply asked him what he thought about the current state of the Big 12.
