People forget Truman was pushing universal healthcare post WW2 at the same time Europe was passing universal healthcare with our help.

Southerners refused because they would have had to desegregate their hospitals. This is despite the fact that the South was the poorest region with the worst access to healthcare.

These wretched souls would rather put at risk the health of their families especially with preexsisting conditions, than live with a program that helps what they consider the "others".
