I really hate the Dilla tribute tapes too many "conscious" cats feel they have to do. It's just cliche now. Dude was nice, but cats ain't even know duke, and it seems tired, esp. cuz a lot of talented alive brothers ain't getting no tribute. So I can kinda understand the frustration people have with Dilla's growth of fame in death.

I like some of his stuff but not everything. Dude just had a good knack for just making some good beats though. His beats on Common's Like Water For Chocolate and Slum Village's (a group he was in) Fantastic Vol. 1 & 2 is my favorite. He did some good work on The Pharcyde's Labcabincalifornia too.

I think a lot of the "obsession" (for the lack of a better word) you see with Dilla stems from the fact that he passed away young and in his prime. Kind of the same way it is with Pac, Big, L, Pimp C, and so on. Personally, he's my favorite producer next to Ye, but i understand how he might not have the same appeal to everyone. I think everything you're wondering will be explained in the video below. If this video doesn't enhance your love and appreciation for Dilla, then i don't know what will. :salute:

Talk to me, what's the fascination with Dilla?

i talked about it for a sec on our podcast a few weeks ago. i became a dilla stan around the time of common's LWFC. personally, when i started to notice how left he went w/ samples and how dirty he kept the sound when everyone was trying to clean everything up, but still achieving the same level of crispness of everything from the drums to a voice. he was simple yet very intricate. if you really want to see how/why some of his contemporaries like comm, ?uest, busta, etc... put him in this godlike space id say do a search on the stonethrows dilla podcasts where they drop stories and examples of his work and how he wasnt afraid to try new things. for example on welcome to detroit his experimenting w/ brazilian rhythms and such...

Just watched this whole doc and I must say, I gained a new respect for the work that he put into his music. He was a true work-a-holic n really lived for his art :salute:
