If airlines could spend significantly less on safety measures and deal with a slight increase in crashes, you don't think they would?

These are the same people that oversell planes in order to get an extra buck. The money they'd save by cutting corners on the would be worth dealing with a few more crashes and near crashes. They don't care about people just the bottomline. Thankfully, we don't allow that, and have an independent body determine appropriate levels of safe operation.

And the government DOES investigate automobile crashes, and takes action thereafter. If the car is faulty, they may go after the manufacturer. If it's human error, they may take other actions (like change speed limits, add traffic controls, ban underage drivers from holding a phone, limit the amount of time a truck driver can be on the road, etc.)

The airline industry touts itself as being the safest means of transportation. With stats to back it up. They didn't get there by saying fukk safety.

If an airline has too many crashes they will be out of business quick fast and in a hurry. That's based on historical facts.
