A lot of folks in here never had the lack of luxury of getting the foot in the door in a career. Like someone said, take it if your options are limited but only as a temporary position. My job requires me to drive all over the south when I have a project that I need to be in person for and I've seen more confederate flags and meth heads than I can count. While there are places I definitely wouldn't' go to a bar at night in, you're not getting chased by the KKK every minute of the day either. If you're just going to and from work, more than likely you'll be fine. The likelihood of something happening to you is statistically small. People have an issue with extrapolating the few incidents they hear in the news and not putting in context that there are thousands to millions of other people who go about their day to day life without incident.

But personally, I would spend maybe a year or two at most before moving on. I wouldn't be living in West Virginia personally.

If it’s really a national firm like Davis & Polk or Skadden then just suck it up for the summer and do it. Branding is power and having a national law firm on your resume can set you up for the long term.

:manny: enjoy the moonshine and pepperoni rolls that W.Va is famous for.
There are no Big law nationally recognized firms in West Virginia. Most WV firms are PLLCs or PCs. Most big law is international. No big law firms have offices in WV. They either have small, boutique firms or personal injury. He's better off being in a tedious doc review atty in a temp contract position for the time being, than trying to get established in WV.
Big Law is NY, DC, LA, Houston or Dallas, CH, maybe NJ (satellite offices), London, Hong Kong, Middle East.

you met one black person from there so that means its cool?

:mjlol:
Considering she’s a Black judge, who was there for about a decade, I’d say she knows a hell of a lot more about their cities, their judicial system, and the climate than any other poster in here.
You asked for advice, I’m giving better advice than you’d get anywhere else.
Don’t take the job nikkas :gucci:
Cold mail until they have you doing doc review in Skaddens basement 70 hours a week with no A/C:hubie:

West Virginia is at the bottom of the list of Worst States For Litigation according to a new survey by the U.S. Chamber’s Institute for Legal Reform
what big law or m&a is he going to do in WV?? :scust:
The unemployment rate is high there. What would his focus be? Tort law and class actions- that's dried up in that area. The only thing going on there is opiod lawsuits against big pharama and doctors over-prescribing. Those will be settled or in the process of settling.

Corporate national and international firms don’t do local work only at the local office. He’ll be doing work national work, depending on his partners load. And it’s not that kind of litigation, please don’t try to correct me, i know what I’m talking about.

Thompson & Knight and Dentons are as close. They’re more “MidLaw” but they’ve got quite a few offices.
You’re giving bad advice, there is no “out” of doc review. Period.
There used to be a forum of Doc Review guys ready to commit mass suicide, called JDUnderground. 2010-11 showed us it’s a bottomless pit. You also missed a few other places.

People saying this is just for the summer don't understand summer associate "Big Law" positions, especially if it's a 2L summer gig. They are hired as summer associates with the expectation of being hired full time after graduation. If it's a 1L summer gig, I say go for it. If it's a 2L gig, I'd really think about whether I'd want to live there for the next several years. If you're single with no kids, that makes it easier. If you're married and/or have kids, that factors in a lot as well in deciding on whether you want to uproot your family to West fukking Virginia.

Also, as little competition as you think there is, I'm quite sure more people are gunning for any Big Law summer associate position they can find at this stage of the year than you can imagine.
