Thanks the clarification (it wasn't clear you were arguing this previously) but I wouldn't call the kicker's role to be as being equivalent to a team driving down the field. I don't think a team's fortune should depend on a dude that's not on the field but for a few plays a game. And when he's on the field kicks the football.

The play of kicking a FG is a team effort as well. The ball had to be snapped, the ball needs to be placed, and defenders need to be blocked.

field goals add strategy and scoring to the game. it also involves an element of skill, even though we make fun of them.

as much fun as "touchdown or bust" sounds.. it'd probably lower scoring.

chip shots turn into turnover on downs.. and then another stalled drive after beginning with poor field position.

I think there's more team effort and cohesion in a team driving down the field for a touchdown, where players have to coordinate to have a successful final play, versus a team depending on a kicker for the final play.

The offensive team still has to do their job the entire way. The line and RB has to block; the QB has to identify and make the throw; the receiver has to make the play. It's a team effort that is greater for its individual working pieces than the kicker's final act.

The QB doesn't throw; the WR doesn't catch; the RB doesn't run. The kicking formation is a departure from the real offensive formation and shouldn't be the formation from which teams win games. Teams should have to win games with their offensive unit from one endzone to the other. There should be offensive continuity.
