unfortunately, the general consensus out there is u need math to do computer science. which is very false. i dropped out of college specifically because i wasn't trying to waste my time learning some sh1t that i just couldn't understand. i dropped out, picked up books on programming, and i was set. no math in sight.

computer science, at least the branch i'm in (programming) requires creativity. and that's something you cant be taught. what they can teach u is the basic principles of programming. but u dont need thousands of dollars at some college to learn that. one book at ur local barnes and nobles will tell u that for less than $50.00.

but i will say, if u are good at math and u love math, u can use it to develop ur own programs to do some magical sh1t that'll have u many miles ahead of ur competition. the problem is, when they teach u math in college, they dont teach u how to apply it to real world scenarios. therefore, when these students graduate with a computer science degree, they have no clue how to connect math to what they have to do at work.

real stuff

You will need to get through math---most of which you will never use again. I second the suggestion to studying at a community college during the summer. For the math you do take, read ahead the first week of the semester so that you are always at least a week ahead of the lecture, therefore when you attend lecture you are seeing it the second time and not the first and you can recognize and fix your deficiencies quicker.

You don't have to know Boolean Algebra but the basics are going to really help you. Learn the AND, OR, NOT, NOR, NAND logical structures. I knew some guys who were code jockeys and couldn't do Calculus worth crap. If you want to work in the real world, keeping up on trends in computing, learning networking and software, and coding will get you farther than an 'A' in any math class.

Nope, this is why I switched to IT.

I was fine at programming but Calc 2 had me like :dame:

Though it wasn't a case of being bad at math so much as that I wasn't used to having to study anything (and the fact that it was taught by a Chinese TA I had a hard time understanding).

If you major in COmputer Science outside of the Engineering school, I think they'll let you get that degree without many math courses. I feel like Linear Algebra is mainly useful for people getting into graphics anyway. I may be wrong about that though, as I've never taken linear algebra.

You should probably understand set theory though. Thats basically what SQL queries are.

Like @spinoza said, most people suck at math because they don't apply themselves. In school I sucked at math because I didn't see the point of learning anything other than addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication so I didn't put in any effort. A few years ago I was building a poker bot (a program that plays poker) which requires math so I had to teach myself using online resources. khanacademy.com, mathisfun.com, and youtube.com served me well. It's not difficult if you put in the work.

the point is, when u pay thousands of dollars to go to college, i believe the college owes it to you to show u possible scenarios that these courses they're making u take can be applied. if they did that, it wouldn't make their ridiculous tuition alright, but it'd at least get people started on the right path.

if they started teaching kids that if u can learn this, here's the possibilities that will be available to you. u can develop a killer app that'll make u millions, you can write programs that'll solve x y z problems, and so on.

it wasn't until i was faced with real world scenarios did i actually give a sh1t about math. and even then, i only decided to learn the section of math that I needed to learn.

Do you mind sharing how you gained the programming knowledge and experience necessary to take on project like that?

I am attempting to follow a path similar to yours...any guidance would be appreciated.

As a person who's fresh in the game.

Where could I start and what I could I read to build algorithms?
Please please do not take math or hard science courses during the summer if you already struggle in that area, you'll fail out of your courses because the weeks (5-6) fly by and you could get frustrated and give up. I told my one sister not to take anatomy one summer because she struggles in some classes and she didn't listen, guess what happened, she barely got a "D" basically failing and have to retake it again. Math isn't my strongest subject because I didn't devote enough time into studying but I always passed the classes. Khanacademy.com is an excellent free website and I've been using it to practise math and study for the GRE. Once again don't go the summer route in math courses if you struggle, you'll need more time to be studying and that's why fall/spring is best.

I suck at math no matter what. I took algebra 1 in 8th grade and barely passed. Geometry in 9th and Algebra 2 in 10th. I had to repeat it in summer school. I was transferred out of Probability and Statistics because I just couldn't grasp it and I failed Discrete Math with an F. I think too logically. I always need to know the why and how. STEM aint for everybody

"Carry the one to the other side"
"why :wtf: "
Maybe somewhere along the way (grammar school perhaps) you didn't fully learn the earlier concepts of math because that's very important. I tell everyone how great khanacademy is it works plus it's free.

i took computer science in highscool and it was hard as fukk. coincidently i sucked dikk at math so yea you need to be good at math. math is the most important subject because it tests how smart you are. anyone can memorize states and presidents in history class but you gotta actually use your brain in math open up that 7th dimension nah mean?

I was a computer science major and math is definitely hard once you get to calculus. You have to be strong in algebra and geometry. I took Calc 2 and failed badly I was too weak in algebra and geometry plus u have to learn the new concepts for calc. You have to remember a lot of formulas. This is not one of those class where u can do the bare minimum and still get an a or b. You must study all the time and u probably will need tutoring. find people in your class to work with that help me alot in math and science class. U can do it but you must put the hours in no way u can do well without studying. I had to change major I don't have the time to work and go school. If u want to be a Stem major you must be willing to sacrifice your free time to studying.

I'm also thinking about Comp Sci. Tired of shytty jobs with no skills. I'm doing precalc on Khan Academy right now and I'm the guy who the high school system pushed through with barely passing math grades. Math honestly scares the shyt out of me. You need to study your ass off, starting right now. I've realized that running away from math is going to keep me from those high paying "go fukk yourself" jobs I've always dreamed of. The question is how bad do you want it.

EDIT: I also want to pass the classes (forget the degree) find that blonde white bytch and shove my math grades down her throat. :demonic:

Honestly you can do math. The hardest part is the speed at which they go in University, most people cannot keep up. On average you're getting 2 classes + a tutorial a week. Damn near a chapter a week. If you can keep up which requires really good information processing skills, practice a lot and go to your math centre on campus + seek tutors you can learn it. Essentially you just have to put in A Lot of work. Also if you go to office hours with the Prof, it can help as well. They just want to see that you're trying.

If possible try to take a full year course instead of half-year. Sure you are still getting the same credit for the course, but the slower speed helps drastically.

I djust took first year calc and some Stats courses for my degree

Make sure you go to every lecture and keep up by doing the problems trust. Math builds off previous concepts so you must know your sht to progress.

What's your programming experience? Do you want to create a poker bot?
