While his last 4 or 5 movies have been mediocre or flat out trash (have not seen Last Airbender or After Earth yet)... I think he gets more hate than he deserves especially from critics who seem eager to bash his flicks because of his cocky/arrogant personality... They went ape shyt and turned on him once he started comparing himself to Spielberg... So it's kind of cool for people to bash him now..
He made 3 great movies and then one decent one IMO with the Village...
I don't think he's anywhere near as bad as someone like Paul S Anderson... that dude has completely butchered what could have been a great video game storyline and turned it into a generic Matrix type action movie. I don't see him o getting anywhere near as much hate as this guy does...
Paul WS Anderson was always garbage though. I guess Event Horizon was pretty good but it's not like he had a drastic fall off.
And M Night was never THAT good. The first two are good films but hardly masterpieces.
In terms of fall offs I'd say Francis Ford Coppola takes the cake. His 70s run of The Godfather Part I & II, The Conversation and Apocalypse Now is up there with anyone. After that
I quite like Rumble Fish and his recent work has seen him go back to more experimental art house cinema and has been an improvement, but still he went from The Godfather to Robin Williams' Jack
