Damn this album is weird

I couldn't even listen to After Last Night because it reminded me so much of some old R&B tracks. Legit made me turn it off. Can't name it, but I think they ripped the hook off some old Teddy Pendergrass track. I'd rather listen to the original vs this. It's a synthetic version to me.

Maybe this is how the oldheads felt when they heard the OG sample tracks being put on rap records.

I just think people have been deprived of real soulful music for such a long time that stuff like this essentially replicates that feeling. This whole rehashing may as well be a "new sound" in 2021.

Nah, I know that hook

Where he says "After last night, I think I'm in love with you"

The way he changes his tone is from somewhere, I don't forget things like that.

If you're such an expert on Philly Soul you should be able to name it then

Yes, he didn't invent changing the tone of your voice while belting. I didn't claim to be an expert you did.

I liked the album, not crazy but a fun listen if you're in that mood. I get the "karaoke" critique and always felt the same way about acts like Mayer Hawthorne and Amy Winehouse. That said, I kinda knew they were going for the soulful pop revival thing based on the singles and Bruno being involved

The Mayer/Winehouse observation is spot on.
