wasn't their discussion of changing the all star format as well. like fans get to choose the allstar but coaches would select the players on their team like a pickup game.

Maaaaaaannnn just leave that shyt the way it is!!! I mean GOTDAMN.... If they gonna go that far them just destroy the whole conference and division thing.

I think they would have to alter it significantly. No more west or east. They would have to likely copy the NFL's technique of teams around the country being in a conference....

but Its a smart idea. It would keep shytty/mid tier teams out the playoffs and get them the picks they deserve so they can improve faster. It could be a major step into introducing talent parity into the NBA similar to the NFL.

No.

Figure out a way to make the league more balanced so one conference isn't always head and shoulders above the other one. Making it top 16 teams just further marginalizes the league's trash teams.

Well, the logical thing to do is to change the format to the best 16 to discourage teams not to tank.

It won't happen(at for this season). The NBA would lose revenue with the way the league is now.... I'm sure the league wants to keep Boston, both NY teams, ATL and Philly in the hunt for play-off spots. Even though those teams aren't play-off caliber, they are large markets, so more than likely the status quo will continue.

it'll never work. The entire East coast wouldn't watch the playoffs.
Ya'll act like the whole east is trash :mindblown:

Heat
Pacers
Raptors
Bulls
Nets
Wizards
Bobcats

Are all legitimate squads that can compete with west teams :what:

And soon enough some of these young rebuilding teams with multiple lottery picks will start to catch their stride (Magic, 76ers, etc)

8 teams too many still. Take the best 8. If you can't be a in the top quarter of the league after 82 games I don't need to see you in the playoffs

I don't think this discourages teams from tanking. Instead of the Hawks being a trash #8 seed instead they'd be in the lottery. Not saying the Hawks have been tanking, just that they would be getting a lottery pick under the top 16 format and not under the current one. Either way if you're going to tank, a top 16 format won't stop you. The actual lottery/draft needs to be addressed for that.

NBA needs to address the fact that the East has basically been dogshyt since Jordan retired. The NFL has the same issue with poor teams getting in over good teams, but the league is much more balanced so it isn't nearly as big of an issue. As a middling Western team you already know you getting hoed out in favor of a sub 40 win East squad every year. It's a bad look for the NBA as a league when you have all these waste of space noncompetitive teams. Taking away their playoff spots wont make them anymore competitive.

Please let this go through. Besides making the playoffs as a whole MUCH better, the top seeds in the east (Miami...*cough* *cough*) aren't gonna have cakewalks to the conference finals/Finals anymore. It's unfair for the top seeds in the West to have three grueling rounds to the Finals whereas the East's top seeds are playing pushovers for the first two rounds.

Geographically, couldn't they send New Orleans or Memphis to the eastern confernce.Switch one of the. With the hawks

Switch Minny with Milwaukee. Milwaukee irrelevant anyway. Doesn't really matter if they suck in the east or west.

Should make the east more competitive.

What does this have to do with anything? :what:

As it currently stands, the only coastal team that woudl make the playoffs under this format is Miami. That's not gonna provide any interest (ratings) from NY, DC, Philly, etc. Miami is really not even a big market to be honest so Chicago would be the only big market team in the East to make the playoffs under this idea.

It would be a nightmare for the NBA.
