It's a recent phenomenon. Of late more and more studies have come out showing a correlation between lack of rest and injuries. That has lead to more teams resting their players more often. So that leads to fans and TV networks being pissed off. The natural middle ground IMO is to have less games. With less games that adds in built in rest as well as leading to less injuries and a better overall product.
Yeah I hear you, but for some reason I believe this wave of some players taking off games here and there won't necessarily stop with less games. Seems just to be part of the game now, it's a new day. Whether it's 82 or 60 games, you'll still have teams who are basically set like a month before the playoffs, star players gonna sit a game here and a game there. For some reason it wasn't an issue until recently indeed, players have access much more sophisticated medecine and whatnot, yet they seem to get injured more than the Olajuwons, Ewings, Mjs, Kobes, Iversons, Duncans...I don't know, I just don't understand how all of a sudden it's an issue.
If anything why not stretch the season a little bit, a couple weeks earlier in october and a couple weeks later in April/May. They'll still get like 4 full months off, one month training camp and pre-season and you still have 3 months of rest.
