It's not really a great tool though. Most communication is non-verbal. Why not just use meetup.com to meet groups of like minded people in person? That gives you a chance to feel people out safely with NO expectation of any interpersonal interaction.

I think that online dating is like 800-p*ssy.
It's there for getting laid.
But for quality, you need to have things in common. Shared interests are a good starting point.
I don't go to meet ups to get a date, BUT if I go to a meetup with equal numbers of men and women and I meet men and women who are physicians, attorneys, engineers, etc., who care about the things I care about, isn't it easier to form friendships and get to know people?
No one is there looking to get laid and if you're amongst a group of peers who are accountable to each other, that's way better than a random hookup.
It's important to have context and cues about people's character.
You just can't get that online.

I hear all your concerns, but I don't think online dating should be viewed as 1-800-p*ssy, it should be viewed as a great tool to meet someone new. Hopefully I will accomplish this early next year.
In fact, it was one of the reasons I changed my major in college to get a deeper understanding behind communication across all languages and backgrounds.

i've seen the talent in my area, and it's not good
