On a roll this week guys.
Let's take a look at our runningbacks today.
Runningbacks
Christian McCaffrey - Christian McCaffrey is the most talented runningback the 49ers have had since Frank Gore and if he can string together 2 or 3 more relatively healthy years he could possibly end up with a bust in Canton. Last yer Christian McCaffrey tore his PCL and was essentially benched the rest of the season. This year Christian has been healthy but most reporters have noted he may have lost a step. He's still very good just not great, perhaps he is just pacing himself. CMC is one of the best dual threat runnings to ever play the game reminding many 49ers fans of the great Roger Craig. He can run smoothly between the tackles or he can run routes from behind the line of scrimmage relying on that second gear to blow by tacklers. I still think he will be good this season but Kyle cannot spam him the way he did the past couple of years. He needs to use him responsibly as his abscence takes a large wrinkle out of the offense.

Isaac Gurrendo - 2024 4th round pick. Guerrendo was a unique pick indeed. A WR who converted to running back, Guerrendo impressed with his 4.3 speed amd his tall WR-like build. One big issue is Issac's lack of field vision. As a RB he constantly ran into offensive line working his cuts. This improved over time with the constant training from veteran runningbacks coach Bobby Turner. Also he can run most of the plays CMC can since he was a WR and has proven to be a capable catcher of the ball and route runner. Unfortunately he was sidelined with a shoulder injury. He won't be ready unto Week 1 or 2 of the regular season. What a blow.

Jordan James - 2025 5th Round Draft Pick. In Oregon James a solid runningback for Oregon. Consistently making gains and being know for his violent running style. He reminds me some of Jeff Wilson. James runs with a low center of gravity and is always looking to engage defenders. One thing I must note he does have a tendency to be impatient and not wait for blocks to develop. That can be coached out. The other issue is he has short arms which limits his ability to catch the football. Even with that said he has impressed the coaches to the extent he will likely be the third running RB on the roster.

Corey Kiner - Corey Kiner is a UDFA from Cincinatti. Kiner is about 5'10'' 210-215lb. He has a stocky build and he averaged 5,7 yards a carry his senior year. He is very 'bouncy' in the sense that he is a no nonsense north/south runner. Nothing fancy just lower the shoulders and go. He ran a 4.57 40 yard dash at the combine so while he is not going to be a home run hitter he doesn't have to be. He is built to get tough yards and has the potential to be an inside the 10 yard line type of runner. As such he has short arms and small hands so don't expect him to catch passes. Also during mini camp and training camp he has fumbled a couple of times but most times it was from trying to do 'too much'. I think it will be between him and Patrick Taylor for the final RB spot. I expect Kiner to win as he has some unique traits that Shanahan likes in his runningbacks.
Performance: B-
Potential: C+

Patrick Taylor Jr - 2020 UDFA. Patrick Taylor Jr has been in the league for a little while and has done ok in limited snaps, but the team is clearly looking for guys with standout abilities and Patrick doesn't really have that. I expect him to be cut this year as he is already 27 and he has younger players vying for his spot. He seems like a nice guy but he doesn't really stand out in any meaningful way. They may put him on the practice squad as an emergency backup.

Ameer Abdullah - I liked him as a potential scatback years ago but he has lost most of his speed and I believe he is here as a camp body and mentor for now.

Unit Analysis: CMC is aging and being slowed down by injury but I think he can be a wiley veteran that uses his instincts to get yards as opposed to pure talent. I also really like what Isaac Guerendo brings to the table even if he may be out a game or two into the season. I think trading away Jordan Mason was short sighted but I like the younger players we got and I trust Bobby Turner and his 5 decades of football knowledge to coach these young guys up. I also like Jordan James a lot with his physical style and the effort he gives every play. This is going to be a talented unit with room to grow.
