He was playing devil's advocate to say that slavery initially was a "choice" between life and death, but even that was eventually robbed from them and how being born into slavery removed the concept of freedom as well. He's well read on the subject, with his next album supposedly set in an alternate timeline where slaves actually did have a choice to counteract the slave trade.
