But the thing is how many shows a year and in what places can do a show. This was in no wheresville NC
The thing you're forgetting is that when you're indie, all those things the labels usually give you in a budget come out of your own pocket.
You wanna stay high on the regular? Out of your pocket. Drinking on all that Henny? Out of your pocket. You eating Benihana's on the regular? Out of your pocket. You wanna get brand new clothes for your shows? Out of your pocket. Oh you wanna lease (these cats ain't buying) that 2013 BMW M6 Convert? Out of your pocket.
And if you're getting fronted cash, anything an investor pays for you while indie, you're paying that back.
So all in all, these indie dudes are barely clearing $30-50k a year. They're just having a good time more often than not. The biggest myth in the music industry is that an indie artist gets all his money per show because he's indie. The second biggest is that he doesn't have to worry about his own expenses.
