I'm glad a black women has been given the opportunity to play such a diverse and interesting character instead of a ghetto rachet or some other stereotype of black women

Was unaware differing view point counted as derailment.

Don't be sully that you couldn't grasp why that scene in particular is so powerful.

Differing opinion :stopitslime:

Rather than refute anything you opted to make a childish, dismissive comment suggesting to watch a comic book movie :camby:

An insecure, abused by a white man who told her she was nothing but a piece of ass, all while being an accessory to a murder is an upgrade :jbhmm:

Well this may shock you: that's kinda why people find themselves glued to that show in particular. The fact that a character has this many issues afflicting her person but can still take the day head on, only later to collapse in self-pity, relishing in a obvious decayed marriage and defeat is relatable to people, if not stirs one's curiosity.

The Sapphire Caricature portrays black women as rude, loud, malicious, stubborn, and overbearing.1 This is the Angry Black Woman (ABW) popularized in the cinema and on television. She is tart-tongued and emasculating, one hand on a hip and the other pointing and jabbing (or arms akimbo), violently and rhythmically rocking her head, mocking African American men for offenses ranging from being unemployed to sexually pursuing white women. She is a shrill nagger with irrational states of anger and indignation and is often mean-spirited and abusive. Although African American men are her primary targets, she has venom for anyone who insults or disrespects her. The Sapphire's desire to dominate and her hyper-sensitivity to injustices make her a perpetual complainer, but she does not criticize to improve things; rather, she criticizes because she is unendingly bitter and wishes that unhappiness on others. The Sapphire Caricature is a harsh portrayal of African American women, but it is more than that; it is a social control mechanism that is employed to punish black women who violate the societal norms that encourage them to be passive, servile, non-threatening, and unseen.

I always found it weird that Shonda Rhimes has two shows with black women as the main characters who were with white men. Scandal is the worst offender. It wasn't until that show got popular that I started to see so much #swirl bullshyt on my Facebook timeline from black women and men. shyt is cringeworthy.

These type of threads are hilarious because you just know its only because its a Black woman getting praise that it is getting this scrutiny. The same poster who stretched himself to point out every "negative" probably thinks The Wire is one of the greatest shows of all time. And I use negative very loosely, being as how HTGAWM is a drama series, so its gonna have flawed characters.

Is this hypothetical white charachacter dehumanizing at times :jbhmm:

In Scandal, the character Mellie is white and is raped by her husband's father, becomes pregnant by him, and keeps it a secret, suffering in silence in order to support her husband's career. Only for her husband to emotionally abuse her and carry on a love affair in plain sight with a Black woman.

In Grey's Anatomy (another Shonda show btw) Meredith, the white main character, literally has everything bad happen to her every week, and then a huge bad thing happen to her to end every season, including once all her friends dying in a plane crash and being diagnosed with a toxic womb.

Its called dramatic for a reason.

@Poitier :umad:You couldn't be more pitiful if you tried :mjlol:

Thanx 4 a concise response this go around :smugfavre:

I can't speak for why others are enthralled, but I enjoyed the murder mystery aspect of the show... All the aforementioned observations seemed subtly wrapped around a good murder mystery, hence the thread. The same story could be told without buttfukking, down low boyfriends, and a woman; Who no matter how great she is professionally (a Championed lawyer and educator), at the end of the night (litteraly) is a miserable wreck who needed a White Savior (her husband) just to get her to this level of marginal happiness

Never seen the Wire other than scattered episodes, never thought anything of it... More red herring dismissive assumptions are welcome though :salute:
