None of this is new. They said the same thing would happen with the cotton mill, the assembly line, the computer, the automobile, etc. But it seems like with every innovation there was a huge increase in prosperity for everybody.

U do realize globally we are in a period with the lowest rate of poverty ever?

Its not machines or automation people are up against. It's competition. Unless u want to send the world back to 1949, or throw away all the machines and computers, competing against people willing to do the same work for less money, or machines/computers willing to do it for none is something everyone has to get used to. Which is a good thing. If a machine or Bangladeshi factory worker can do your job, it's probably a miserable dead end job someone in a first world country shouldn't be working in the first place.

The goal HAS to be to enable everyone to reach their full potential through maximum employment. Everyone can't be a doctor or IT manager but our middle class shouldn't be fighting for minimum wage jobs. We are collectively smarter and of higher value than that.
The fact that this even needs to be spelled out :mjlol:

Tax has to be paid on profits.

And here is another death blow to one of redistributionists' favorite whipping boys.... corporate taxes

Profits dont mean shyt until they are transferred to the individual. Individuals dont have as much lobbying power as corporations. So we should toss the corporate tax, and make all taxes on profits up to the individual. Only penalties on corporations should be for sending money out of the country.

I'm not saying technology and innovation are bad things, it's actually the opposite they make life better. The point I'm tryna make is when it gets to the inevitable point where technology can replace significantly more jobs than it creates then it's a problem when the main source of income is from working jobs. This cheap labor u speak of is great for the owners and those at the top but shytty for everyone else just tryna survive who are alread underpaid as is and liable to be replaced.

In my perfect world we'd have a basic income to live off, robots/tech would perform most tasks and those who wanna work would have the option to...kinda like the world in wall-e except we all wouldn't be fat slobs

You're only looking at the immediate, short-term effect. Your argument could have been made and has tried to be made by many people whenever new innovations were introduced to the world. In the long run, the automation should mean lower costs for the company and lower prices for the consumer. When consumers save money here, they can in turn spend it somewhere else. In essence, there is a net balance. The positive to this is that we've moved ahead and created better, cheaper ways to produced the same exact product, which is the goal of industry.

Do u not realize how half of jobs being taken by robots will destroy our current economy and social structure...

Granted I believe a universal basic income will help alleviate that when it comes to that point but it's no telling if/when our flawed was government would do something so drastic
The height of the service economy has only been around and at this level since the early 90s. Back in the early 20th century, piano manufactures felt the same way about the phonograph since most people enjoyed music before then by actually learning how to play it and now this new fancy device that plays it for you was going to ruin them. It did but it was not the end of civilization. This is part of progress and different sectors of business go through ups and downs.

Also if you think people were going to stick to a set process or way of doing things when there is a cheaper and more convenient alternative available until the end of time you're a bit naive. Especially if you believe it should be the case out of some abstract concern about the stability of society and the economy. There are still tons of service sector and low levels jobs that require a human being that will need these individuals.

This would of happened sooner or later. Hell they probably been planning this for a while and just used the 15 min wage as a political tool to carry it out.

U say that but the cost of living is steadily increasing while wages have been stagnant. Yeah a lot of products are cheaper and more abundant but who is really winning when the average wages are stagnant while corporate profits are rising.

I'm not arguing against automation I agree that it's inevitable and a good thing in the long run the issue is with our work a 9 to 5 to survive economy/mindset...which is why I proposed the universal income.

Yeah there a going to be some jobs that have to be performed by humans but a significant portion can and eventually will be replaced by technology. Driverless cars that replace drivers, fully automated factories to produce goods, semi automated restaurants and grocery stores with self checkouts, many jobs have taken a hit from the internet and apps. Hell even lawyers and doctor's being replaced by software now in some places so no area is safe

Not sure if I agree with that. The average American today has access to a computer, a LCD TV, a smartphone, cable, and a list of other things that 20 years ago were only easily attainable by the upper middle class. Back in 2000 I paid $2100 for a plasma and $1200 for a Dell laptop. Look at how quickly that's changed.

You think somehow that automation is like a switch that just shuts off labor - it takes humans to create, maintain, and continuously innovative. Automation does not equal the end of jobs. It means new, different jobs.

Right - because our taxes wouldn't go up if minimum wages were raised.
