The moral panic around sports betting is idiotic.

There’s definitely cause for some panic. Every game, every sports show, all these YouTube channels with their sponsors, countless betting gurus and whatnot on social media, all commercials with celebs. This shyt is now everywhere, and all you have to do is push some buttons on your phone. You even see it more on here in game threads with cats pissed over missed parlays and shyt. It’s a lot, and it’s been a lot real quick.

How bout when they remix the definition of words, or move the goalpost....

"Mass shooting" - Columbine, Aurora, Sandy Hook, Dylan Roof

Fast forward.....

"Mass shooting"
- Tre shoots two ppl outside local nightclub.

- "Multiple mass shootings occurred in inner city neighborhood, last year."

Above the fray.
I tell what's funny, hearing the term "degenerate gambler".......from reputed mobsters. When they used to do real life mafia interviews or films, the people in that life would ALWAYS use that term.

Shooting people, garroting them, or extorting them is okay, but they draw the line on gamblers. Those guys are degenerates.

What's the problem with that? Advertisement? That's what we're talking about here?

Moral panic sure. But it's killing the game because these people are sponsoring the game and there has been history of refs for instance fixing games due to bets. Due to the infamous 1919 World Series and the NBA Ref Scandal, it's a pretty good idea to think sports betting and leagues should have a wide girth apart.
You forgot two words, buisness and money. Sports and gambling go hand in hand and is an ingenious way to create an ever increasing money cycle.

If most sports didn’t have a heavy buisness aspect to em and were things we mostly did out of tradition and culture then that’s a different story

Was on a DraftKings kick for a minute. Made some money and lost some. Those games where a player needs 8 rebounds and they only get 7 have me pissed off :aicmon:

Done for now smh

Combining the relentless effectiveness of American capitalism with a vice like gambling is not going to end well for a lot of people. American companies are just too good at marketing.

We should have left sports gambling as the domain of the underworld. If you want to place a bet, you gotta go to Fat Tony. :heh:

:comeon: I was being facetious. I don’t think drugs, prostitution and gambling be criminalized. It’s an individual choice.

But I l do recognize that the combination of American capitalism and a vice like gambling will wreck a lot of lives. Regulations and help for addicts should be put in place though.

The crazy part is that right now we're only seeing the tip of the tip of the iceberg. A lot of the people addicted right now - the ones you see in the videos posted in here, are able to sort of hide the problems and insulate the addicts from public embarrassment etc. A large % of the kids in college are relatively well off and have parents that will pay debts/get them help and support. Even among my own group of friends/associates etc that have started gambling, they didn't grow up with money etc but they have good jobs/careers that allow them to absorb losses at least for now.

I try to always tell people, behavior and habits ALTER YOUR BRAIN'S CHEMISTRY.

It's not just about mental strength or responsibility etc. The longer you go repeating patterns, your brain will literally rework itself in ways to ingrain that behavior into itself because it thinks "oh the person to whom I am attached does and thinks about this one thing A LOT....since I work for this mf how do I make it easier for him to continue doing this?"

What's going to happen is that you're going to see the rates of credentialed professionals getting their licenses yanked skyrocket. Attorneys, financial advisors, accountants etc etc etc.

Poor people can only lose so much because no matter how addicted you may be, you still need money to bet. But someone making a couple hundred thousand can cause ALL KINDS of havoc before they hit rock bottom.

And unlike in the past when you had coalitions which included both liberal and conservatives that were against the expansion of gambling, nowadays governments from both parties are fully onboard. Especially because they see the money available from legalizing and taking a cut of the revenue.

Yep.

The point is, we have to save people from themselves. People with addictive personalities, those who lack self-control, etc need parameters set in place to keep them from falling off the rails.

This shyt is going to cause a world of problems for people who can’t control themselves!
