So Kendrick Lamar can't afford to wait another 3 years to drop an album

The commercial success of GKMC kept him a float and he had songs that stayed in rotation for a while. This album while was dope for what he was trying to do, can't sustain him for 3 years. He basically needs to drop an album within the next 12 months to stay relevant. I only make this point because Kendrick stans want to call him the GOAT but if he's not putting out material consistently he doesn't deserve that title.

He at least needs to drop a mix tape this year as well.

And I hate how people want to put the artist of the moment in the same category with Nas or Jay-Z when they have over a decade in the game and at least 8 albums under their belt. They have longevity. At this point Jay or Nas can afford to wait 2 or 3 years to drop an album. Kendrick Lamar.... :francis: nah. Not really. I wouldn't wait 3 years to check for him at this point.

He will prob do a mixtape back to the style of GKMC to try and win some fans back that turned off. Pick and choose the right singles to be on without pulling a weezy, he'll be fine.

The guy has dropped 3 albums in the last 4 years

He didn't have mass appeal until after GKMC so stop it. He will always have a core audience but as I said before I'm speaking directly to the bandwagon fans that are hyping him up every chance they get. He needs to put out more material. It is what it is. It doesn't have to be an album but at least some mix tapes. I mean can we get a TDE compilation album.

It just seems like the way they're launching their artists is.. dumb. I understand them not wanting to oversaturate the brand BUT the expectations are already there. After GKMC dropped you had 2 meh projects (not even gonna count SZA :scusthov:), no Jay Rock project so basically Kendrick Lamar is TDE at this point.

OP has a point. I personally would still check for Kendrick in 3 years but this fickle hip hop community will have forgotten about him. Even 2 years is risky. This album was dope but felt like it came and went word of mouth wise.
breh, if fans are THAT fickle, that's on the fans, NOT Kendrick.

most spoiled unappreciative fan base there is in music.

I would expect him to start dropping music, or at least features much more rapidly now. He's clearly involved with Kanye's camp now with the All Day writing and feature. I expect that's gonna open him up to a lot more collaborations through that network. Kanye is known to keep armies of people working on his shyt.

Kendrick has tended to do rap+other genre collabs for awhile now. Jhene Aiko, Gaga(which didnt get released), Imagine Dragons, etc.

That's what i mean tho, irl people I talk to or are friends with got it in constant rotation, can't speak for most of the country, but it seems to be still selling well and got the critical acclaim etc

the game is the game. that's the music business. look at Ludacris. He put out music all the time and was relevant for a long time but look at him now. He just dropped a new album and it don't even matter. He's irrelevant. As far as Kendrick Lamar, he got away with waiting 3 years to drop another album because GKMC was considered a "classic" and he had that "Control" controversy and a few features but that about it. This album wasn't wack but he doesn't contain songs that will sustain radio air play for the rest of year. He dropped this album in March and won't have any summertime bangers. I think he's at the point where his career can go either way. He needs to put out more material plain and simple.
