To be fair, Bungie prepared for Destiny via the Alpha and the public Beta and trying to purposefully run their servers ragged and encouraging everyone to assist in doing so. They wanted to ensure they knew what they were dealing with when the game released and ensure there wouldn't be such issues. 343 obviously didn't, and you see what that got them.
