First two trilogies had a clear story to tell, even if the prequels could have used a better editor. That last trilogy though, I pretend that shyt doesn’t exist, because they had no idea what they were doing.
All of that boils down to Disney. Disney’s stock in trade is happily ever after fairytales, and that’s not what Star Wars is.
Star Wars is a legacy product with a philosophical, morality-based core and a universal, multigenerational appeal. It’s rooted in the tropes you’d see in old adventure serials, coupled with thousands of years worth of mythology and storytelling traditions.
One of the keys to storytelling is the hero’s journey, which is something that Disney and all these new-millennium fanfic writers running Hollywood today have no concept of. You saw what happened to Marvel after these people got too involved.
The prequels have their faults but at least there was a clear vision behind it, and we knew what story they wanted to tell.
And that story wasn’t a happily ever after fairy tale.
It was the story of a hero’s journey.
It was a story about overcoming adversity.
It was a story about good versus evil, and adventure.
It was a war story.
It was a story about the fall of a government and the rise of a regime.
It was a story about redemption.
None of which are Disney’s stock-in-trade.
