They aren’t getting those bonuses, it’s a typical Trump scam. The full amount has to be repaid if the officer doesn’t remain employed for 4 years. Spending cuts from a new Congress in 2027 or a new president firing them in 2029 would mean they have to pay it back. That’s financial ruin. This does give them an incentive to do whatever Trump says though so keep that in mind next time someone here claims ICE won’t do xyz because it’s illegal.
Not taking a position, just explaining here: I think people really have a problem with the context if anything. I doubt you'd hear as much under Biden or Obama but Trump has had ICE killing folks, harming citizens, etc so there's a sentiment of "Why would you wanna be part of that"
Taking a position: There's also the sense of how fukked up it is in terms of autonomy. DOGE has slashed countless jobs, Trump's policies have encouraged mass layoffs, and weren't the job numbers negative last month??? But if you apply for ICE you're making six figures plus a bonus.... Is anyone else uncomfortable with the way folks are effectively being squeezed into taking on these jobs???
