You never told me you can see the future. Huh. Time is a flat circle and all that.
I said 'heading' down the same path. You don't have to be a soothsayer to see where something is heading up to this point.
They ARE building a foundation. MCW, Embiid, Noel, Saric, that's just part of the foundation. It's a process that's going to take more than 2 drafts; we knew this when Hinkie took over. I don't give two fukks what their positions are. Hinkie doesn't draft by position because that's a galactically stupid way to build a team from scratch. Right now all he's caring about is BPA - best player available.
Oh yes, because we all know it's better to draft ANOTHER center with injury problems.
All teams in the lottery should be concerned first and foremost with drafting the best player available because they suck; that's why they're in the lottery. Drafting for need isn't necessary right now because the only thing the Sixers need right now is talent, talent, and more talent. Draft the guys with the highest ceilings; the guys with the highest potential of being great.
You're falling into a trap by taking this route. You don't keep drafting the best player available (because you can never project it'll translate to being the best player in theory - look at Westbrook), if you've already got a player that will fill that void. It's counter-productive, especially a player that has major injury concerns - an 'all eggs in one basket' is never a smart option when drafting over a period of time. It's wasted opportunities that could be had building elsewhere. And by no means am I saying a 3.5-star wing (if you're in desperate need of one) should be taken over a 5-star center, if you already have a center, it's about taking risks that will be proportionate to maximizing your success across the board.
It would be less of an issue if Embiid was able to play this season, because then you could start working out what fits and what doesn't. Now you have to wait a whole season before he actually plays and then a further season to see if it works, you're looking at 2017 before you know whether or not Noel can play the 4 and Embiid can stay healthy......
The only relevant results right now for the Sixers is the development of guys like MCW, Noel, Embiid, and Saric. Everything else: the losing (which is just a byproduct of rebuilding), how they fit together, what positions they play, is secondary.
How you gonna develop Noel into a 4 when he's going be playing center? How are you going to develop Embiid when he's out for possibly the entire season? How are you going to develop Saric when he won't come over for at least two seasons?
Can't you see by the time you actually develop them together, and work out if they fit together or not it's going to be 2017? What you're telling me is you're putting all your faith in: forcing a round peg in a square hole, a center with major injury issues and a forward that might not even come over?
And you have the nerve to sit there and say it's 'galactically stupid' to draft by position.
When it becomes clearer how good these kids are gonna be, then you worry about the other stuff. That'll be the next step.
If they need a shooter, they'll be able to afford one on the free agent market, or they can trade a misfit piece, or they can just draft one. The draft picks, the cap room, and the cheap young assets make that possible. Hinkie's fully aware that all of these players might not turn out; that's why he goes out of his way to acquire as many picks as possible. That's why they had like 5 second rounders and 2 1st rounders yesterday.
It's what he's doing with the picks is the problem. He's filling up his plate before he even has a chance to sit down and work out if he can eat it all.
