So tactically, what can the Cavs do to defeat the Warriors?

Couldnt have said it better myself. @Gil Scott-Heroin was the one trying to discredit this but a slow pace is gonna their best hope I'd say. And they're a 3 point shooting team, but Cavs arent gonna be able to rely on the 3 ball as much as they're are accustomed to.
why not ?
Slowing the pace down only strengthens the Warriors defense, a defense which is already 100x better than the Cavs in a vacuum. And as you know, league-wide FG% decreases with every second that goes by on the shot clock - why decrease your chances even more against the best defense in the league; a defense which has multiple lineups that can switch on nearly every position?

Just look at how the Warriors can handle the Cavs when they slow the game down, look at the proximity of the primary and help defenders and how they have more time to think/adjust -

Look at how LeBron scored the majority of his points -

Early in the shot clock, before the Warriors defense had a chance to get set and work out what to do.

The only hope of winning is fighting fire with fire against this team. I said it last season when they were down 1-3 (as did Lue), and once they started attacking early, and got into their actions before the Warriors had time to get set and switch/adjust properly, what happened? They came back and won. Warriors went up 3-1 when the game was played at a 93 possessions per 48mins pace; the Cavaliers came back when the game increased to a 95 possessions per 48mins pace. This is just a example of what happened last season -

It was much of the same for the first half of the series, once they managed to find a ratio that favored shots earlier in the shot clock they managed to take a better control of the games.

Limiting possessions is a worthwhile gamble. And they didnt win solely because of the pace of the game last year. The pace they played at had little to do with barnes being ass, dray getting suspended and bogut getting hurt.

As we talked about before one of the major series changing decisions is making curry switch onto lebron or kyrie and bullying him. You cant do that when youre trying to fight fire with fire. Value possessions, limit turnovers, play slow and hope for favorable whistles, thats a risk worth taking instead of allowing one of the best fastbreak teams of all time to run off long rebounds early in the shot clock.

Oh, I know very well that Barnes' bum ass, Draymond's suspension and Bogut's injury had A LOT to do with it. You don't need to tell me that - I've been the biggest advocate of that. The increase in pace was one of the reasons that allowed the Cavs to capatilize on the Warriors misfortunes; looking to attack early in the shot clock - the very thing Lue wanted them to do from the start. I don't know why you can't acknowledge this.

Of course you can. You do it EARLY in the shot clock. Again, like I said they need to go into their actions EARLY before the Warriors defense has time to get set and think. If you believe attacking Curry is the best option, then they need to attack him early. Why slow the pace down and attack Curry when he can have more time to hedge and think, and a higher chance of recovering back to his own man (I saw it multiple times in G1)? Why slow the pace down and attack Curry when his teammates have more time to help and think? You're playing into the defense of the Warriors if you slow down the tempo against them. You have to catch them off guard and minimize the time they have to think/get set.

You value possessions by trying to get the best shot possible and exhausting weaknesses in the team's defense. Again, you don't do that be slowing the game against this GS squad.

They need to take one of the big 3 out the game early. The only feasible one is steph. They need to attack him hard. it's tricky since steph is avoiding switching and is hedging hard then running to get back to his man, Just as the big in the back slides over to cover the paint. However the screener on steph needs to be a midrange shooter or a quick passer because after the roll either the screener or a wing will be open.

I'll say from seeing Game 1 the Cavs have to cut out the live ball turnover's and forget about crashing the offensive glass to get all 5 players back on defense to limit GSW's transition offense some what.

After that it's gonna come down to LeBron having to be better than Durant on both sides of the court and whoever is guarding Curry to take away the 3 and make him a driver.

The thing also about slowing down the pace vs this Warriors team is that the Cavs don't have the same advantage in size like they did last year. The Warriors are just bigger, more athletic and smarter than last year. Zaza/Javale + KD helping Draymond grab more boards is a lot different from Speights/Bogut/Ezeli + Barnes helping Draymond getting rebounds.

You slow down the pace and miss your shots while the Warriors are on the other side being more efficient and picking up more offensive rebounds (size being a factor) to get more shots will put you in a place where you have to play faster.

Like mentioned also you don't want to give them a chance to get their defense set because then they lock down and shooting a bunch of highly contested threes with little time left puts you in a deficit fast.

They need to find out a way to win the boards before they even think of slowing the pace down. Do they have the personnel and the right lineup for it without sacrificing offense/defense and getting a bad match-up(s) is the question.
