Multiple income streams. If you're an actor you'll do interviews to promote the thing you're in and that's when you can push your music too. Will Smith was still making music until he started getting too many roles. If he can no longer carry a movie as a lead he will probably pivot back to music but he's been trying to make money on social media for a while now.

And Hustle and Flow itself was a small budget movie with a first time director. The only surprise is that it made it to theaters in the first place
