The Philae lander has detected organic molecules on the surface of its comet, scientists have confirmed.

Carbon-containing "organics" are the basis of life on Earth and may give clues to chemical ingredients delivered to our planet early in its history.

The compounds were picked up by a German-built instrument designed to "sniff" the comet's thin atmosphere.

Other analyses suggest the comet's surface is largely water-ice covered with a thin dust layer.

The European Space Agency (Esa) craft touched down on the Comet 67P on 12 November after a 10-year journey.

Dr Fred Goessmann, principal investigator on the Cosac instrument, which made the organics detection, confirmed the find to BBC News. But he added that the team was still trying to interpret the results.

It has not been disclosed which molecules have been found, or how complex they are.

Prof Mark McCaughrean Senior science adviser, Esa
But the results are likely to provide insights into the possible role of comets in contributing some of the chemical building blocks to the primordial mix from which life evolved on the early Earth.

:patrice: "organic molecules" huh? I'm guessing they found carbon. Which makes up rocks. On a rocky comet covered in ice.

Not surprising, that how life came into existence on earth.

Comets carrying organic molecules collided with this hunk of rock

How did organic molecules originally formulate on comets?

Did something else collide with those hunks of rock? :ohhh:

It could be a piece of a parallel earth populated by sodomites that God destroyed.

Well, i guess when we understand more than 5% of all matter in the universe we can then attempt to prove this exceptional hypothesis you've laid out. :ehh:

Even though allah already told us that advanced technology and a war destroyed other habitable planets and those beings.

i think it prolly has something to do with water being on comets, but other than that I don't really have anything to expound on the situation..maybe some of our organic coli chemists can drop some knowledge

Not necessarily. An organic molecule doesn't just have to be made of carbon. There are many molecules consisting of carbon that aren't organic. The classification however is highly arbitrary. CO2, graphite just two off my head that are carbon containing non-organic. Carbon in rocks would be mostly inorganic.

A comet has hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, helium, and many more simple atoms. Space is full of things such as radiation, heat, cold, gases, pressure and other chemicals that facilitate the formation of simple compounds via natural chemical reactions. Chemistry can happen anywhere. That's really all there is to it. Creating organic molecules is not hard...getting organic molecules to form more complex structures leading to life is the hard part.

To clarify, gases like methane, and simple alcohols are small and organic. Both of these (and many more) have been identified in space already.
